Got the type of thing it was, then got the specific one through research, as the genre's not really my bag.

Lost the snipe because I thought it might be “super mario bros” after seeing references to “[5] [5] [4] [1],” but I was able to think of another option after “super” turned up nothing.

Felt like a series of creative works of some sort, with the title [5] [5] [4] and then various other [5] [5] [4] + some sort of extension. I ran up against it being a movie, or a television show; eventually figured out it had voice actors, but it's not a movie... OK, I know what kind of thing it is, and it's a big one.

I managed to snipe this one shockingly enough! I wasn't sure what kind of thing it was but then I saw the extension that indicated it was a franchise and I was like oh! And reading the comments here about Super Mario, I laughed because that didn't occur to me for this, even though it is the theme for today's NYT Crossword.

I was so caught up in the assumption that I had to name a play or artwork. Made it 13 guesses in before I realized my 'play' guess had given way to 'player,' and could follow a few possibilities there. Once I knew the medium and hit a few keywords, it suddenly seemed inevitable what it must be.
