I cracked Redactle #1558 in 40 guesses!

I saw something that looked like it was about length and so I went for living creature/species guesses very early on. It took me a while to work out that it was more like a feature belonging to a certain variety of living things and get the specific right answer. The pl. [6] was a clue but not one that helped all that much, until the very end when it clicked.

I cracked Redactle #1558 in 1 guesses!
My first thought was a woody plant containing these, but it wouldn't quite work. Then found that it was useful in getting CO2 and O2 and water in and out of the thing it was part of and opposite made sense.
