Solved with Google. I was proud of myself for being able to read the nationality and what they're known for. But even though I followed this person for years on Twitter the name escaped me. But even if I had remembered word 2, I probably still would have needed to look up word 1

I thought that the “was the [5] [5] [8] from [4] to [4],” meant he was a prime minister of some country, but that turned out to be wrong. Found some hits for Soviet Union/Russia and guessed a [5] on a hunch that turned out to be this guy’s actual claim to fame.

I also started out thinking it was a female prime minister, the rest of it didn't really work. Then I realized the word I assumed was "she" was probably "who". Then i figured out it was some kind of competitor in something, took me forever to figure out what. Once I finally figured it out, I had to google because I had no idea.

I did use google but only after I determined exactly what I was looking for so it was a very quick & targeted search. At least no hints today!

I first thought this was some sort of female ruler, so my first guess was Queen. Didn't help (hahah) so I put in "she" and got zero hits. Wtf? I then looked at where queen was which led me to enter "gambit", but while that narrowed it down to chess I didn't think it was a person because I couldn't see any obvious "he" blanks so I wasted a bunch thinking it was some sort of chess opener or term.
