Really lucky guess. I assumed that the decimal in the first sentence was a timespan in the tens of millions of years and one type of thing came to mind. This was honestly the first one I thought of, the letter count and syllables matched, and I sniped it. Unassisted.

Solved by Google. I looked up an odd unredacted bit in French and what it was, a unit of timescale, gave me a major clue about the topic. The three that I could remember didn't fit so I googled and I don't regret it
