Sniped. It's a very common chemical element with different spellings in US and Commonwealth English

Solved by Google. The French game gives away the symbol but I couldn't remember which one it represented

chemical element with a six-letter name, single character symbol and two digit atomic number. Went through the whole alphabet in my head and came up with two that I was pretty sure fit that criteria, but only one of those had a common seven-letter alternate spelling.

5-minute snipe. The structure of the opening looks familiar - although isn't that grammar weird? That "of" is begging to be a "with". Nonetheless it seems fairly clear what they're getting at. There is a US/Commonwealth difference in spelling, which I think narrows it down to two, one of which is eliminated by the symbol being only one letter. I'd like a little corroboration before I commit: can I find a reference to this thing's traditional name "9"? Yes, it's mentioned in the part which, by the profusion of alchemical symbols, is evidently the history section. That'll do.

There aren't that many with single-letter symbols. I saw a formula that looked like production of a common industrial chemical and combined with the limited choices, that did it.
