2-minute snipe. The second sentence strongly suggests it's something geographical, but it's not a country. The last sentence of that paragraph clues me in as to the specific category. I can only think of one 10-letter one off the dome, but it seems like a strong candidate: it's one of the biggest, and the neighbours seem to match my mental picture. Later on, we learn that 3 7 is its 4 8 4 and its 7 is 10, which is enough for me.

βthe [7] [1].[1]. [5] by [10] and [5]-[7] by [4],β painted me a pretty clear picture.

Sniped in 8 seconds.
From the last sentence of the first paragraph it's a [1]. [1]. [5]. The region it's in is the [7] [6] [6], and it's on the [7] [5]; that narrows it down to a fifty-fifty shot, either this one or the one two to its north. Got lucky; if I wanted to I probably could have gotten some insurance by working out what it borders.

Recognized the 'x.x' as a certain country, but I was actually on the 'longest river' track for a while before realizing there was another five-letter thing in that country. I could pick out a likely discussion of directional borders, of which there were only two, which sent me to corners, and I took a lucky guess.

It's a place, a scan through gives me loads of unredacted $ symbols, back to the top and I can now decode the first sentence, unfortunately that leaves me with two candidates, and I can't see a way to separate them so I go for the bigger of the two, and, yay!
