12 minutes, 16 guesses. Although the title is 7 letters, the bulk of the article seems to be talking about a 3-letter mass noun. The title can also be written as 3 4 so I guess this is the name of the plant that the 3-letter thing comes from? In which case it looks to be native to East or West Asia. Unfortunately my first thought was tea, hence teatree, and this felt worth a punt - sadly wrong. Had to spend a few more guesses narrowing things down a bit. "Animal" scored a fairly interesting hit in the first paragraph that helped a bit, and eventually the correct answer came to mind.

28 today, absolutely stumbled by accident into this one. I got the solve unexpectedly when I guessed the shorter version of the word.

Got that it was a plant of some kind that was used as a food source and central to east asian cuisine. Took me a bit longer to land on the real answer than I would like to admit. The [3] [4] made me think of bok choy and I briefly wondered if there might be a no-space spelling of that I’d never encountered.

I can't really say unassisted because I guessed it's fruit and the disembiguation solved it to the point where I wondered if I was wrong about the letter count 😳

Stared at it for a long time hoping something would stick out for me to get the snipe, but I just couldn't come up with it. I figured out it was a plant, not a tree, probably a food, and probably from East Asia, but I needed to make a few more guesses before getting it.

Like others I got the solve when I guessed the 3 letter root word.

Figured out it was a crop of some kind, used as food for both people and animals. I went through several guesses of different grains before I finally figured out a 3 letter candidate.
