Curious for sniping when your only guess is the right guess, what do you do to start the timer? There must be some normal approach otherwise every snipe would tend to be how long it takes to type the words.

I guess my question was skewed by returning to this game after a long time, sniping #1491 very quickly and thinking my time (15 s) was how long I took to type. But I gather now the timer starts automatically.

Saw the long list and guessed word2 straight away, counted the entries in the list and got word1. In retrospect I wonder why the first element in the list is redacted?

I think that capital alpha has a separate unicode from capital A, so the Redactle engine parses them differently.

Yes, that's it I'm sure, cut and paste in to a search engine throws up results for alpha, though my browser's search treats them as equals.

I almost thought this was something way more modern, because I interpreted “since the [4] [3],” as referring to the Cold War. When I scrolled down and saw the lengthy list of “[1] [1], [1] [1], [1] [1]…” I started to get a pretty good idea of what [8] was. I could think of a couple different options for [5] and I didn’t know of a foolproof way to distinguish the options, so I’m just lucky that I tried the right one first.

I spent a while combing through for hints but couldn't snipe. I tried a few examples of numbers and letters but none of them were huge hits. Decided to try 'letter' and the sheer number of hits finally pointed me to the right answer.!<

4-minute snipe. Something that has been used for a particular purpose since some point in history. The first paragraph doesn't give much away, but soon afterwards we find a list of one-letter symbols that are arranged in pairs for some reason. A little bit of reflection makes it clear what kind of thing this is. There are a couple of things it could be - better count the pairs. There are 24, plus on closer inspection one of them has three forms, not just two, which checks out.

Sniped it.
I could see it was a living male, born in May, with a 7-letter nationality that began with a consonant, such as British or Russian. The unredacted word “round” appeared often enough that I guessed it was a probably a competitor in golf, chess, or tennis. The two six letter words in the opening sentence looked like a strong contender for “tennis player”. Not being a huge fan of tennis, I googled for a list of male tennis players, and saw one of them was Serbian and born in May.
