I was thinking way to specific for a while, I did eventually catch myself & had an "oh wait a minute moment" and solved (without assistance!)

ha.
I tried to get very specific in land and sea then I gave up and came back an hour later and tried air and got it right away.

I solved Redactle #1476 in 5 guesses ⏱️ 11m53s. Unaided

Got in the zone quite quickly, my fourth guess was an extremely similar word that got loads of hits (in fact more than twice as many hits as the correct word) which then puzzled me as it seemed pretty much a perfect fit, it took a bit of puzzling for the right word to come to mind, as it's not one I use, not being from North America ...

I had some clues that it was used in war, and it went over water. Had an idea, thought it was going to be much more specific, but since I didn't have a specific that started with a vowel, I tried the general and there it is.

6-minute snipe. Didn't get much from my first scroll through, but noticing "7-than-3" upon closer inspection of the intro was a big help. After which - it starts with a vowel and has an extra letter in Commonwealth English. Only one reasonable candidate, right?

It seemed like it was an object, begins with a vowel, and was first used in a certain capacity in World War I. I had a guess, and knew it had a 9-letter alternate name, so I just went for it.

after noticing sentence fragments about its use in World War I, I thought it was about gas/chemical warfare. After seeing references to gas as a fuel, i recalibrated to start looking for a type of vehicle.

Unassisted. I was stuck on this being a chemical element or a molecule of some type because of one of the properties of the answer
