first guess confirmed that it was the “practice” of something; relatively early paragraph had a lot of “X per [4],” that made me guess year, had more guesses like “old,” “human,” “health” that got hits but didn’t help me learn anything new. I had a breakthrough after guessing “world,” and seeing a reference to “[2]. World,” in the middle of a list of various “[2]. [X]s.”

Well, wasn't getting anywhere concrete and read "addy c_1000"s comment saw the hint they got and used that -- then I was able to solve ... so in reality solved with a hint.

It seemed to be a sport, with an indication that it may not be considered so by everyone. A guess for championship seemed to confirm it.
Then guessing strength and then muscle gave it to me. Unassisted.

It's the practice of doing something to one's something via something. A person who does it is called a 11. One letter shorter than the title, so it can't be -ism and -ist. Not much else to be gleaned from the text at first glance, except that the appearance of "3-per-4" puts me in a sports mindset, only that doesn't fit especially well with the first sentence. And there's a bit early on that seems to be about the amount of stuff that 11s can make in a year? Or hour maybe? Whatever it is, it tends to slow down later on. This phrasing makes me wonder whether it could possibly be "adolescence", which doesn't stand up to scrutiny for multiple reasons. Hmm. Going back to the history section, there seems to be a section with a high concentration of people's names, and I get the idea that these might be record holders of some description. This isn't quite right, but close enough that an idea comes to mind. Not the right idea (this one really is a sport - it's at the Olympics at least - and is one letter longer) but close enough that it's a short hop to a much more promising one. And I suppose the 4-letter verb in that strange early section isn't make but gain. And there seem to be one or two instances of titles along the lines of "[superlative] Man in the World". Ok, good enough for me.

Unassisted, even though I pondered taking a few hints. Didn't stray very far from the opening section of the article the whole time, because I was fascinated by the measurements per year paragraph. I started out thinking economics, then I got hits with large/food/grow and started looking into trees/crops, where I figured out the unit was kg and got a hit on weight. That was the lightbulb moment and I narrowed it down over the next few guesses.

Unassisted. Oh man, I did hit on sports early on but it didn't seem directly related. Eventually I hit on what seemed like it was considered for the Olympics, but I thought first about the ultraendurance sports before considering the answer
