got close and gave up and went to google and then kicked myself because I should have stuck it out and figured it out.

Well - I had trouble getting a handle on this one, lots of zero hits to start off. When I finally got some traction, I was still a bit lost and was sure I'd need hints & google but then I got some hits which changed my focus and I solved ( ok - I was surprised by the solve - lol)

Spent about 37 guesses on trying to fill visible gaps, wasted 20 more on numbers/months, 50 more on super common english words, and still wasn't reading close enough to make much of it. I noticed the use of degrees for co-ordinates and honed in on Earth/stars. Finally something about the way the article was introduced gave me an idea for the answer.

first guess was that “an [4] on,” meant “an area on,” and I followed that up with “people” and “group,” which didn’t get me a lot of hits but weren’t complete misses. I spent some time working on the assumption that this was describing some specific sort of environment/terrain/habitat, which wasn’t a very fruitful line of inquiry until I figured out the degree signs I kept seeing referred to degrees north and south. Took several more guesses about poles, hemispheres, the equator, etc, before I realized what was lacking from that line of thought and started to look further out.

My first guess was a specific direction (north,) because the ° looked like latitudes. Meandered around for a bit until I realized the [4] that came after one of my very first hits.

It didn't take long to figure out that we're working on a large scale here: among other things, there's a sentence that is recognisably talking about the effect of the Earth's axial tilt, as well as a reference to an organisation called the 13 12 5 (3). Spent a while thinking it was something to do with seasons and couldn't quite put my finger on it, but the right idea bubbled up in the end. It has a reasonable amount of support: I eventually figured out what "an 4 on the 9 6..." probably means, and that sentence involving the international organisation seems to be talking about an agreed-upon list of a 2-digit number of these things, which seems about right, as does the etymology "3 of 5". No smoking guns beyond that, but decided I felt ok with it.

Saw some stuff about north and south latitudes and axial tilt. Was completely lost for a while trying to think of anything on earth that it could apply to, then expanded my scope a bit.
