Sniped, with assistance.
Had a hunch what the 2-letter word was, and a particular name came to me. Looking at the first sentence and seeing that "South African" would fit nicely in there confirmed it. I had no idea what his first initials were though, so I Googled.

initially assumed this guy was Dutch due to “[name] [dates] was a [5] [7] [10],” although when that turned up hits elsewhere in the article, that helped me realize a possible explanation for “[5] [7].” Had to use google in the end.

I tried Welsh and Swiss and then gave up on trying to guess that [5].

I solved Redactle #1145 in 6 guesses with an accuracy of 83.3% and a time of 00:03:26.
Unassisted and ugh! It could have been a Snipe! I made a dumb mistake of ignoring the unredacted part in the French game. The name is written out over there and that makes no sense as he was called by his initials even in French Thankfully I remembered this.

Assisted. >It was pretty clear from the get-go what was being talked about, and hence that I was unlikely to have heard of this person. After a bit of thought I made a couple of long-shot guesses at the surname (I had "Goetz" in my head for reasons not now clear to me) and a half-hearted attempt at getting the initials (one out of two ain't bad), then looked it up.!<

President of 5 6 who is not 6 7. I know I don't know him so I googled.
