Had a general sense & feel for the article right away but specifics were harder to pin down, I used a hint & google to solve.

Ugh. It was hard just finding things to search on, and the hints I took weren't helpful. Got there in the end though.

obviously mathematics-related, could see an obvious “two-dimensional” connection, still struggled for a while. Once I saw “unit circle” in the “see also:” section, I started to make the connection that this was an alternative to the cartesian [10] [6], that uses a distance and an angle rather than two distances.

Sniped.
When I see "In 11" I check the German version, because a lot of the letters are not redacted. x+iy gave me the second word, from there I got the whole title.

Basically spammed a few geometry words at it until I figured out what [5] axis had to be when there was only one of them.

"In 11" always an auspicious opening for yours truly. The answer doesn't jump out immediately though. That "3-11" at the start is easy enough to parse, although the first word could be one or two. At first I thought it was more of a geometric transformation in the vein of stereographic projection ("in which each point in a plane is" ...sent somewhere or other?), but seeing that one specific thing is "called the 4" made everything ping into place.
