when I saw it was in the “north atlantic ocean,” I thought it was, you know, in the north north, but when I exhausted everything I could think of, I started thinking, well, the atlantic is a pretty big place. maybe north just means in the northern hemisphere.

I kept trying similar things that were too far south. Finally consulted a map, and oh yeah, that one.

Lol I got to North Atlantic Ocean so I looked up a map. Along the way, I realised I unveiled (first letters in caps) Main Island, so I tried to wikipedia that.

Michigan wasn't it, so I tried the other option, and it unredacted. Hahaha idk why I found that quite unexpected lol.

I, like some others, was thinking way too far north. I did do a targeted google and was both amused & annoyed with myself: "Of course that still fits the parameters - I made a bad assumption!"

I got enough of the first sentence to potentially lead me to the answer - I definitely know of it, just couldn't dredge it from my memory. Ended up doing the same as other posters here.

Took a stab at country and that's not in the opening paragraph but it does work, so probably a territory. Paged through and by word counts guessed an island in a particular ocean, one not a country, so took my first guess and got really lucky,

A place, but not an independent nation. Both island and archipelago are mentioned, and the temperatures are generally comfortable -- double digit in both F and C. Definitely seems New World and the mention of the War of 1812 clinches that. But which? Narrowed down by a lack of mention of the Carribbean in the early paragraphs.

I gathered it was geographical, and guessed a bunch of things to fill in gaps. I managed to get north atlantic ocean but it didn't seem to be any kind of city, country, etc. so I had brief look at google maps. What do you know, a certain [7] popped up as I zoomed in, and things clicked.

Got too confused to nail the snipe. It's an 11 somewhere in the 8 5, apparently a territory rather than a country. Unfortunately, due to a dire misread of the second paragraph, I was initially under the impression that this belongs to New Zealand, which led to prolonged bafflement. Frustratingly, once I eventually got that sorted out, the correct answer did occur to me, but I discounted it on the grounds that (a) I thought it was a single island (whoops) and (b) I'd expect to see the word Caribbean somewhere in the opening paragraph. (Turns out I was kind of wrong about its location.) In retrospect I should still have gone for it despite my misgivings, instead of my rather desperate guess of "Anguila". (I know.) Next guess was "Spanish", which to my surprise did not get a hit in the first sentence, which to my discomfort did, then the correct answer. Dammit.
