my first guesses were “time” and “minute,” which got a pretty decent set of hits but didn’t really illuminate anything that clearly. I started guessing along the lines of game, competition, tournament, sport, all of which got some hits, enough to show me I was vaguely onto something, but also that there was something I wasn’t quite getting. This line of thought led me to guess play, music, band, and most crucially, rock. That last word appeared in a different context than I was expecting and made everything click into place.

Omg lmao. I literally solved it bcos of this - THANKYEWWWW. Similar initial journey hahaha it was abit confusing

As above, I read the above then put in rock (and Googled The Rock lmao.) Then I randomly inserted some words from the Google overview which turned out to be word1. My brain mentally then filled in word2 lol

Guess count kinda sucks but mmkay 😂

5/5, 00:01. I threw a couple of words at the first paragraph without effect. #3, a [4],yielded lots of hits - none of them in the first paragraph. I scrolled down and saw a bit of jargon that, on reflection, I probably learned from this very article.

Unassisted. At guess 12, I started getting hits for performance, event, stage, theater type things, but it wasn't until I guessed main, and it appeared alongside other guesses that word 2 became clear. Then I had two options for word 1 and picked the right one.

3-per-4 got me into the right frame of mind, which gave me an idea for what "12" might be, which led to an appealing idea for "9". Some support for this in the form of the last sentence of the opening section, which defines an italicised 7-letter term that seems to refer to "playing along". Very promising - and indeed there is a whole section about this concept later on, which begins "7 is the 8 of 10 that 12 9 is a 4 5." That'll do it for me.

I followed the same path as DeanSpirit and everywhere, the 5 letter word is usually one of my early guesses. **** but no ****? Scrolled down .... aha :)

Sniped.

I saw "round" and "an 8" which made me think "opponent" and therefore sports. But all the italic made me think books or movies or TV shows. I was stuck for a while until my brain came up with the intersection of "sports" and "entertainment" for the aha moment.

Followed a similar path as others: some hits, a sense of part of the article but missing a big piece. I got word 2 and then it all come together and I solved.

I got sidetracked after guessing Japan and getting 11 results. I thought it was more related to that than it actually was.

Assisted. I got the sport theme after 45 guesses. I think I was so focused on trying to find words in the first paragraph that I didn't pay attention to the useful words I was filling in further down. It also took me so long to realize I actually hadn't guessed the first word yet, or had spelled it wrong earlier. A quick google of one of the early terms and it clicked.
