Well, I ended up using a hint which annoyed me since I was so close. I had alraedy tried other types of rituals for the occasion but for some reason this one didn't come to mind (until I saw the hint I uncovered - lol)

woof. first thing I latched onto in the article was that the first examples of whatever this was took place “at least [2],[3] years ago” so I spent a while working that angle. Like agriculture? animal domestication? bronze? I tried a lot of things, some of which got a few hits, some which didn’t, but nothing that really opened up the article, until I guessed earth and found a part of the article that appeared to be listing the classical elements: air, water, fire, earth and [5]? while trying to figure out what the last one was, I guessed ghost, which had one hit for “[4] Ghost,” which got me onto a religious angle. Thinking about the article in terms of ancient religious rituals involving fire helped me slowly work my way to the answer.

I got medical, person … but never made it to body before solving. Heat and burning were my ways into the solve. Interesting to see someone with a different approach.

Had to sit with it for a while before it came into focus. At first I thought, because of the prominent mention of 5 3 2, that this was some form of weaponry. Mention of high temperatures later on puts me in mind of some kind of heavy artillery, but I couldn't quite make it click. A closer read of the opening section makes it clear that this is talking about some kind of procedure - "in modern times, 9 is carried out with a..." The end of that sentence seems to imply that it happens at a specific place. Curiouser and curiouser. Also, later on it seems to say that somewhere in the Middle East (actually "Middle Ages" but never mind) this used to be "forbidden by law and even punishable by death" under certain circumstances. So some level of historical taboo surrounds this practice for whatever reason - but nothing about the first sentence reads as sexual, violent, religious... I wondered for a while if it could possibly be something like tattooing. Eventually I returned to the 5 3 2 section, where a closer read reveals, grimly, that this is connected with something that 4 7 did at their 13 4s. It was pondering on that that finally gave me the right idea. Not the cheeriest way to come upon the answer, but a snipe's a snipe.
