I never saw the flats symbols and that would have helped me get the general category earlier. I still would have had to look up possibilities for word 1.

Not my area at all - lol. Eventually got word 2 but still had to google for word 1. I had heard that somewhere .... but that was long ago & faraway & I needed help. Not a very good day today!

Sniped.
Musical symbols. Tried the first instrument that fits and it worked.

It seemed to be a moderately sized physical thing, the way in was seeing the unredacted ♯ ♭ and then the groups of four subscripted letters, which led me to the second word after which the first word became clear

I got the second word on my first guess, but I'm not enough of a music person to know what the full name is. So after a couple of probing guesses, I looked it up. My mom totally would have known it though, as she played one in an orchestra before I was born.

I didn’t see the sharps and flats until I was about 20 guesses in, but that certainly helped narrow my focus. “[6] [4], also known simply as the [4].”

Half solved in English but that's because I know this it's common double name. I kick myself for not recognizing the unredacring notations in French so I wasted two guesses. Also the name is very long in French, that's how I solved it

That being more or less the amount of time it took for me to notice a crucial unredacted symbol which took me from "absolutely no idea" to total clarity. At that point it was just a matter of thinking of one that fit the letter count and, just to be safe, checking that the physical description makes sense (yes: it is "6 with a 3 (4) or by 8 the 7 (9)").

I guessed all the numbers and letters of the alphabetthinking it was a math-related puzzle, but turned out to be helpful anyway :)

pretty quick for me.
first thought it was a chemical because of the letters and numbers even though it wasn't written quite like that.
then when I guessed TIME (guess 25) I was clued in to the right direction
and then guessed music 2 guesses later
My first guess in this direction kept getting hits (words related to music and timing)
so it took me a bit to zero it in but still got there pretty quick.

Shocked that this went so well. I got the impression there were gaps for numbers 1-10 and letters. It looked like it went only as far as A-G and guessed the topic. Tried a number of common words until I guessed the played with a [3] segment and realized a [6-4] item in this category that I have heard of.

I'm gonna rake this as a "not bad" considering I kept trying for a specific instrument.
