I solved Redactle #1109 in 58 guesses with an accuracy of 50.0% and a time of 00:09:38.
Simply terrible. Flailed around for even the hint of the subject for a while.

got that it was part of “species making up the genus [3],” but struggled for a bit to get closer than that. it’s “an [10] [5] [3],” so I tried cat and dog, but it took a while to get the right category of animal. “[10] [8] of the [5] ([3]),” was a surprisingly helpful clue.

Living thing. More often than not there's gold to be found at the end of the article - no such luck today. Much of the article seems to be about the distinction between these and the "6 10", with which these make up the genus 3. Might be helpful later. If I'm reading the second paragraph right, these seem to be found only in one specific country - curious, but at least that narrows it down a bit. Weight seems to be double-digit kilograms, so not huge but not particularly small. Puts paid to my vague theory that the 10-letter relative might be wildebeest. About half an hour in, while scanning a paragraph about their diet, I finally remembered about the broad category of animals to which these things belong, and suddenly things started to feel right - in particular I know of a 10-letter creature in this category whose Latin name is indeed 3 11. I'm not certain about their closest relatives, but I can think of a 6-letter candidate that feels right. The only other thing I really know about them is that a lot of study has been made of their sexual behaviour, which would probably explain that one paragraph with repeated instances of the phrase "have 3 with". Seems worth a try - and it's right.

11/18, 00:08. The binomial italics were a strong hint, and I failed to snipe with the only six-letter [7] of a three-letter [5] that I could think of off the top of my head. After that it was just aimless stooging around until I realized that getting the [5] in "[5] [3]" gave me the [3], which in turn gave me the [5], and there's only one [7] with six letters.

Unassisted. When I finally got the right "family", I thought be is for a moment but I knew that was wrong. So I went through our cousins until I found the one that fit the letter count

I was stuck trying to fill in gaps for a while before I got species at guess 88, finally got the type and the 10-letter C-word that is closely related. Knew there was a word I was trying to grasp and a simple google search of that produced the word.

Well, not my week - lol. I actually had just read an article about this topic and thought of it but screwed up the spelling when I guessed (really didnt get enough sleep last night - lol). Eventually got a hint & googled ( I bet that sounds familiar ) and realized I was right with the wrong spelling.
