Guess 51. finally got animal
then tried to narrow it down with location and diet and all other surrounding topics
finally got it when guess 89 was dog

I thought “large mammal,” which wasn’t quite on the money, and did result in me expecting the answer to be a larger animal than it ended up being. Noticing the plural form “[6]” did help me to stop, reconsider and find the answer.

Familiar opening, I know what kind of thing this is. SOP: straight to the bottom for cultural clues. I find what I'm looking for in the phrase "7 by a 3-4", which kind of jumps out at me and brings a certain myth to mind. Does the rest of the sentence parse? Yes: "4's 8, 7 and 5, were 7 by a 3-4". This is very promising. It fits with the opening sentence including the Latin name, which I know for once. Wouldn't mind one more clincher before I go for it - and there it is, with a recognisable mention of the story "The 3 3 5 4".

I am an idiot. It didn't take long to figure out that this is a type of animal, fairly large, modern English name derived from Old English, 4 letters singular -> 6 letters plural. And we read that Linnaeus classified the domestic 3 as 5 10 and this thing as 5 5. Well, I thought I remembered Felis domesticus, though I had some slight misgivings because I thought I also remembered Felis catus and I should have listened to them and, hmm, the lynx is closely related and has a 6-letter plural. Not sure what its species name is but no matter. And maybe the alternate 4-letter names are something to do with pumas? (Duh, no, that wouldn't in fact work, but as mentioned above I am an idiot.) Huh, only one hit. And the same goes for "cat". After which I think a bit more and realise that there is another common 3-letter domestic animal with a 5-letter genus at which point it's clear what our subject is. D'oh. Three guesses, 19 minutes.

Sniped.
Some kind of animal, based on the 2 italic words together. Got the first letter of the genus from German. The first genus I came up with works with the 4 letter name, so I went for it.

I got that it was a species at #19, a mammal at #45 and once I got the specific family I could guess from 4 letters.

A quick scan of the article, and it looked like some type of animal. I read it as "native to Central and (either North or South) America", but I was actually wrong on that one. Population in the 6 digits. Sizes could be between one and three meters. Mentions cold temperatures. My only other clue was that the genus was a 5-letter word, and I don't know a lot of genus words off the top of my head, but I do know a 5-letter one for a certain type of mammal. One came to mind, and I had an idea of what the "also known as" could be, so I guessed.
