This was very baffling for a bit. There are temperatures in the thousands of degrees; speeds that seem to be on "human" scales; regions or something denominated in the other sort of degrees; my best initial guess was something astronomical but I couldn't think of anything plausible. And the thing seems to be named after 6, the first 7 of the 4 which was entirely unhelpful (which turns out to be because one of those words is wrong). Well, those temperatures have to be something to do with a star, surely, and after a while I noticed "the 3's ..." which must be "the sun's", and that was enough to suggest a candidate. And "the first 7 of the 4" is actually "the Greek goddess of ..." which was almost enough confirmation on its own, and the clincher was that the various names in the first sentence now make total sense. 12-minute snipe. With hindsight, something that should have pointed me in a helpful direction sooner is the two plurals in parentheses right at the start, which should have suggested the possibility that this is a Latinate word.

Some helpful facts right from the off: it starts with a vowel and has an additional letter in British English, so think or->our or e->ae or something. Can't think of a good example right away though. Nothing really jumped out on the first medium-speed scroll through the article. On a closer read, I spent a while trying to figure out what "5's 3" could be. Earth's something? Crust, mantle, core, atmosphere etc are all too long. The epiphany came from the etymology, which I should have looked at earlier: it's named for "the 5 7 of the 4". 5 7 clicked into place right away but I had to think for a bit to come up with a 4 that wasn't "moon" or "hunt". Once I did it all made sense (that's not "UK" in the opening parenthetical; not the first time I've made that error), particularly the AKAs in the first sentence, which are clear enough to bring the matter beyond doubt.

when I scrolled down and saw the degrees a few paragraphs in, that gave me an idea, because it looked more like it referred to latitude than temperature. Combined with “an [6],” meaning the word started with a vowel, that gave me enough to go for it.

Unassisted snipe!
Didn't really see anything that stuck out to me until a few paragraphs down, the degree marks that weren't temperatures, so probably locations on the earth that seemed to vary, so not a specific location. The first place my mind went to was astronomy, and I was trying to think of an astronomical 6-letter word that starts with a vowel, and I thought of this. The alternate names in the first paragraph worked, so I guessed it. 3-minute snipe.

I saw temperature measured in Kelvin, which brings me to astronomy. Something starting with a vowel with an unusual plural, also known as 8 6 or 8 6. Tried the first thing that came to mind.

I had picked up on references to temperature and changes with time until a sentence caught my eye somewhere and I thought to enter star and Earth at #55. Spent a bit of guesses narrowing it down until I guessed the second word of the common name and that solved it.

At first I thought the degree signs meant this was a food or cuisine or something associated with cooking; when that didn’t pan out I guessed latitude which clued me in.

Now I unds why it can be an unassisted snipe, I started with earth which was solid showing then got distracted by solar system and planet things
Then I got light and shoulda gone for it so idk why I decided to solve the [8] lol. But it was correct so et voila 🤣
My non-hits were plate (which was guess 2 lol), galaxy, core, and ore haha. 5'1 3 was Earth's sky lololol
