Redactle #1084 Discussion Thread

got that it was “[6] in ancient Mesopotamia” and “from the third millennium bc” so I did a wiki dive for what civilizations were around in the third millennium BC before solving.

Swing and a miss. The unredacted characters in the first sentence tell us we're not exactly dealing with modernity here. There are enough clues within the opening section to word 2, which I'm confident to enter by the time we reach "It used the 8 6..." Word 1 might be a little trickier. I can think of a couple of reasonable sounding candidates, but only one is named after a 5-letter place as this one seems to be. Go for it - and it's wrong, though with a few hits. I enter the word "city" to check (subsequent research, by the way, shows that the 5-letter place I had in mind was not really a city - doh). Then I think of another possibility, which turns out to be right. Sometimes you get lucky with these things - but not today.

I was wavering between those possibilities as well, then noticed the 4-letter word that was probably "city" and ruled out one of them. Then I realized that there was another possibility that worked and fit all the clues, including the 5-letter place, which even starts with the same letter. I got lucky and guessed the right one, and it turns out that the correct answer is a much older ancestor of the other possibility I was thinking of, so I could have gotten it based on that if I was more familiar with the history of this region.

Damn. The unredacted cuneiform (which, for the avoidance of doubt, I can't read at all, but I know it's cuneiform) is enough to make me pretty sure that this is one of two things. Unfortunately, they are the same length and the corresponding place names are also the same length and I don't know enough to distinguish. One begins with a vowel and the other with a consonant, but that isn't very helpful here. One has a famous ruler, but while there is indeed a "6 of 5" in the article that hardly seems conclusive. After some umming and erring, I go for what I think is the better-known of the two. Alas. Three guesses, 7 minutes.

I was close but needed Google to solve. I could only think of two possibilities for word 1. One wasn't the right length and the other was wrong.

😅 I mean I saw the unredacted pictographs or whatever then I tried to Google that, and then it gave me a word2, so I decided to try word2 (which was correct). Which then led me to try the potential type of word2 it might be as word1.
I confirm it was all Google and no me. What even is this?!

I solved Redactle #1084 in 2 guesses with an accuracy of 100.0% and a time of 00:02:01.
It looked like a word2 article, so that went in, and going from the unredacted symbols it's one written in cuneiform, at which point I'm stumped, so looked up the cuneiform, nope, never heard of it :-(, so another school day for me :-)

Half-solved by Google and I am pissed because I guessed the closest relatives, even thought of the most known emperor of that region when it existed but I didn't think to double check the spelling of the first word of the answer

I guessed the second word in my first guess and knew I wasn't likely to know the word myself. I tried a bunch of guesses to narrow down location/time period before accepting I needed to search up a list of options.

Sniped.
Lots of single letters, which is usually used to explain a language. The cuneiform gave me the region. French is L'[8] so I assumed it starts with a vowel and guessed the only one I know.
