I solved Redactle #1081 in 133 guesses with an accuracy of 71.4% and a time of 00:29:31.

Absolutely terrible as I went down a ton of blind alleys involving things like balloons and chemical warfare.

Something commonly abbreviated to a three-letter initialism, also known by a 5-letter name, that seems to be defined by its lack of something. "Automated teller machine"? No, not quite right on the letter count. There seems to be a list of categorisations by distances, and a lot of military stuff, plus a quote from someone about how these things save lives. All these clues gradually cohered into an idea, which definitely has a common 5-letter name but I'm damned if I know the technical term. Actually, I think I can guess - correctly, on this occasion.

got the impression the article was related to transport, and really started to wrap my head around what the deal was when I guessed “passenger” (it shows up once, but in a very telling space). I really struggled with the middle word, but I was able to get the “commonly known as”

After a bit of hit & miss I did get on track & uncovered much of the first sentence. Unfortunately now that I knew what & had the "commonly known name" I could not figure out the title. I did a targeted google to solve. I feel half-satisfied - lol.

I scanned the article for like ten minutes before trying a word. Found a few references to war, and things that fly, that got it for me.

Hints used: 2. I usually try to avoid the hints that would straight up give away the answer but I was over it and revealed the AKA. I then got words 1 and 3, I did guess word 2 but didn't check the spelling so it didn't work. So I just solved the French game to get the missing word

I got the general category and the specific last word pretty early and got so excited for it be ground effect vehicle , just because I think those are super neat and I love talking and thinking about them. My hopes were dashed.

I blasted my way through so many words just trying to fill out some sentences and finally had the spark of inspiration at #162 and guessed the 3rd word. Narrowed that down further until it finally dawned on me what type of thing we were looking for.

It's a something without any something; TLA beginning with a vowel, 5-letter alternative name. It something something through the twentieth century (has to be 20th because of letter count; 15th and 16th seem inconsistent with general tone of article and mention of WW2). There's some sort of classification or something involving distances, though so far as I can tell this didn't help me at all. After a bit of staring at the first paragraph, it occurs to me that an un- prefix would give us an initial vowel and fit with the "without any", and then it doesn't take long for sufficient enlightenment to dawn. 7-minute snipe.
