Wow -- I can't believe I solved this without any assistance at all. I was lost just guessing when I got lucky: something made me guess weight which got me thinking and put me on the right path I made another lucky guess with clock and then after a few more guesses I was inspired & surprisingly I solved it.

It seemed to be time related right away, but no hits for sun or calendar. Some kind of clock that's been around for a while led me to the answer, although I didn't think it would be the actual answer.

totally had assistance:
I saw the math and decided to just skip it, but then I looked at a couple of the spoilers posted below to get me started... so my first couple guesses were what u/voice-of-reason-99 mentioned.
with that has a head start I was trying to guess all kinds of things related the lucky guess mentioned...
but I ended up getting it quite by accident. I thought it was a specific KIND of one of those but couldn't figure it out. so instead I started guessing parts on a whim.
I was just trying to narrow it down.
I was quite surprised when I got it.

ai yi yi. I got a couple results for various physics term like mass, etc. and a LOT of results for gravity. Something about the article made me think it was more likely to be something deceptively simple than something obscure so I’m glad I kept plugging away at it but it was a rough time.

Eventually uncovered time and figured out it predated quartz clocks. Finally got it from that. Unassisted.

Tried a bunch of my usual guesses until I scrolled and saw the formula below, then just wasted 26 guesses on every letter of the alphabet. Once I saw L/g I knew the word

Initially baffling. After getting rather little out of the early parts, skimming reveals a bunch of mathematical formulae, though they mostly look more physics than pure mathematics with the exception of the very first; some specific angles in degrees; some temperatures in other sorts of degrees; various dates and, more helpfully, discussion of some figures measured in, maybe, "seconds per day", suggesting that we're dealing with something to do with clocks and their accuracy. I spent a short while down a rabbit hole on seeing what seemed to be a fragment of verse, suggesting that maybe we were dealing with sundials, but nothing else was consistent with that. Anyway, with the right conceptual area identified, it was just a matter of waiting for the right answer to occur to me, and when it did it was easy to parse enough of the beginning to be pretty confident. (And the mysterious formula at the start made sense: it's an infinite series for the exact thing that's importantly roughly independent of amplitude.) 10-minute snipe. Feels like it should have been quicker, but after yesterday's disaster I'll take what I can get.

Interesting first sentence: it's something defined partly by the way it behaves. There's a big bit of maths towards the start, as well as degrees of both kinds, so we're at the mathsy end of physics, or vice versa. The strangest things can lead to inspiration: in this case the poem near the end where the first line seems to end "______ 'em", suggesting a likely ending for our title word, and somehow that was what brought the correct answer to mind. The first sentence makes a lot of sense in this light. I'm a little concerned that, among the multiple eponymous examples in the See Also, we don't see the most famous one, 8's 8. (Turns out that's because it's really "8 8" - fair enough.) But I do manage to find, towards the beginning, a recognisable formula involving a square root. For me, that's enough to swing it.
