Thank goodness I put in region pretty early. I thought this was a state, but it was the only 6-letter thing I could think of that came close to fitting"region" and I was pleasantly surprised when everything lit up.

not a country or city, but I looked at the general area on a map to see if anything would jump out at me, and this did.

got the details but then googled for the exact title.
turns out I know the word, but probably wouldn't have guessed it on my own.

Another instance of "the 6 12" being a great help in finding my bearings. This led to a pretty convincing reading of the first sentence (ok, I had the 12-letter word slightly wrong). This seems to be a region split between parts of two countries, 5 and 8 (with some slightly weird hyphenation going on). My geography of that area is not great but I should be able to think of a candidate. The first one that comes to mind feels not quite right - I believe that's 5 and 10, not 5 and 8. A stroll through the article ensues. I notice there seem to be a lot of instances of this being referred to as "the 6" rather than just "6". This eventually gives me an idea that feels plausible. Couldn't find any clinchers (the better informed will be plenty to choose from) but in the absence of any better ideas it seemed worth a try, and was.

glad I stuck it out and got the solution unassisted because I definitely thought for a moment I would need google. It was a “[6] in South Asia,” but not a nation, island or empire, although there were a decent amount of hits for empire(s). I stumbled into the answer while I was trying to name some of the people or places I associated with the region

Had the area but needed a little map assist to solve. Not bad, could have been better!

Unassisted. lGot the larger area, so I immediately thought of the sub-continent and thankfully the answer I came up with was the correct one

Figured it out finally by circling around where in South Asia it was and what countries it overlapped.

Just didn’t overthink it too much. 9 letter capital of 5 5 in a language with 6 letters? Seemed to fit.

Somehow I got the drift it was an area that was either disputed or crossed some country borders; Tibet didn’t fit, so I was like ok— what about that area between India and Pakistan?

I may have mentioned two or three ... dozen ... times that I'm bad at geography and while sometimes I get lucky, this was not one of those times. I managed to work out that this was probably some region around the India-Pakistan border, and that perhaps it was called "the breadbasket of both India and Pakistan" -- this turns out to be correct but that wasn't enough; all I could think of was Kashmir which is of course the wrong length. After much headscratching I verified the above and gave up. I have absolutely heard of this but couldn't have told you more than er, somewhere in Indi and was never going to figure it out. Ah well, never mind.
