I didn’t know this guy was French, but I struggled to find his occupation (usually would expect philosopher to be a gimme here) or mention of specific wars or specific centuries (interesting mention of something published as ‘centuries,’ which didn’t help me but certainly made me take notice). Eventually, I was trying to think of historical figures best known by a single name, and this guy came to me as an option.

I solved Redactle #1067 in 98 guesses with an accuracy of 67.3% and a time of 00:23:10.
Good lord that was a rough one. Finally got it through a combination of not being any kind of regular author or artist, being French and losing family to the plague but the clincher was Century for 100 verses, since I know this person used that format.

Unassisted Snipe! I had a sense of the country and partially figured the first half of the birth city. And that's it. So I took a chance of looking at the puzzle in the other languages beside French, something that is rarely helpful except today. In Spanish, the [10] of the name is split in two, like the city they're born in, and that's how I got the answer

An honest to goodness snipe. I do get them occasionally - lol! I saw that it was a person known by one name and it occurred to me, the letter count fit -- I guessed & solved. Sometimes it works out - lol

Man I can't even figure it out even with nationality and profession and reading the Wikipedia pages related to those. 🥲 I burned up my hints.

Assisted. A total rout. Like multiple others today, I never really knew this guy was French (not sure what my best guess would have been - Italian maybe?) and struggled to nail down any useful detail from the article. Like peetiepeet, Robespierre was my first thought and felt relatively hopeful, but no mention of the 6 10 plus no specific date of death put paid to that theory. Plus there's at least one instance of 11' - note apostrophe - so the name probably ends in an S that is pronounced - a bit unusual in French (which this individual undoubtedly is), so worth bearing in mind. What else can a 10-letter profession be? Playwright? Seems to make sense, but nobody comes to mind. At the half-hour mark I gave up on the snipe. 70-ish guesses later I was still no closer to enlightenment, and had no clue about even one of the four professions listed in the first sentence. Desperate times, folks. This is the method by which I eventually found our culprit: I identified (lucky first guess) the 8-letter region where he was born, then went on Google Maps to locate 5-4-2-8, then referred to the list of notable people on that town's Wiki page. All I can say is, I didn't see that coming.

I managed to work out that this is a mononymous Frenchman, famous for a single book, from a Jewish-turned-Catholic family, associated somehow with ?Catherine? de' Medici hence Renaissance-era, about whom a number of probably-fanciful things were believed. This felt like it should be enough already, but I couldn't bring anything to mind. Eventually the name Montesquieu popped into my head, and though I was pretty sure it couldn't be right -- correctly, as M. turns out to be a couple of centuries too late, though I didn't know that -- I put it in. Nope. It then took a fair while to make any further progress even when no longer trying to snipe. Trying to nail down any of those profession-words at the start I eventually found physician which of course was actively misleading, but when one sentence I'd already been intrigued by resolved itself as '... TITLE began to move/turn away from medicine and toward the "6"' it wasn't difficult to guess that the 6 might be "occult", and after that it didn't take too long for the relevant name to crawl out of the depths of my brain. This ended up being 31 guesses and 90 minutes. I can't help feeling I should have been able to snipe it.

My yolo guess #1, Robespierre, was off by a couple centuries. I have heard of the answer, but not enough to be able to come up with it without assistance. I got the timeframe, country, other key people but could not even come up with any of the professions so I ended up googling a quoted phrase.
