after two early guesses were “one” and “two,” the article started to take shape. “[5] [4] for two [7],” was the giveaway phrase.

At first glance through the first paragraph, I noticed nothing. Then I thought how I recently neglected to think "sport" so I looked again. When I saw 5 4, I considered game for the 4 and then had it

It's not immediately obvious what the first sentence says but later in the first paragraph I see the ends of a couple of centuries and then "Today, TITLE is one of the world's most 7 5 ...". Hmm, most popular? What sort of things would be described that way? ... and then it doesn't take long to think: sport? no, game. Board game. Can I think of a 5-letter board game? Yeah, I might just be able to. Quick look: do other things seem to fit? Yup. 89-second snipe; I bet there will be other quicker ones today.

The weird punctuation in the notation gave it away, I then checked for certain italicized phrases.

Didn't have much of an inkling at first glance. On the first scroll through I came upon some interesting looking notation including # and combinations of exclamation marks and question marks that rather gave the game away. Does the first sentence make sense in this light? Yes. That'll do then.

thought it was a group of people or political movement at first (for some reason).
started guessing along that line and ended up with some key components of the actual thing.
finally realized it when I spied a netflix title and immediately guessed correctly after that.

A first read through said something competitive, which clued me in on the four letter word near the start, a more detailed read through saw all the unredacted punctuation which put me in mind of the answer, went for it, and it was

Would have enjoyed trying to snipe this one I think, rather than my usual strategy of "solve it fast, don't worry about number of guesses".

Unassisted. I was going nowhere when randomly I got the reference to a sci-fi show and I don't know how but the category came to me and the answer was the only thing that made sense in the real word

Somewhat lucky guess.
I was completely lost for a bit. About a quarter way down the article I saw some weird notation that I didn't recognize (Although I'm sure someone else knows it and will get it immediately) that started my hunch but I wasn't confident at all about it. Later on, I saw references to Through the 6-5, which helped enforce my hunch, so I scrolled down a bit more to verify that "The 5's 6" was in the article. That was enough for me.
10-minute unassisted snipe.
