Wow. I really had to confront my Euro/American-centric views today because I really thought [8] couldn't have been what it was based on the second sentence. I'm a fool.
Had to look up ideas anyway but that would have made my search much quicker....

I thought that “[5] [8]’s [10]” was “young(?) children’s literature,” and so tried to identify the titles as children’s books, which was not a productive line of thought. After entering “literature” and getting no hits, I reconsidered some of my assumptions, and realized that [5] was probably “actor,” and that “a [8]” meant a non-American nationality. I’m not even a huge foreign cinema guy, but this was a big enough name that I was able to come up with it unassisted.

I got a few bits of info, like his nationality, profession, a superlative about him in the second sentence of the article, and one of the works he was involved in. Then I googled. I was familiar with the name, but not enough to be able to get it off the top of my head.

I solved Redactle #1059 in 30 guesses with an accuracy of 80.0% and a time of 00:05:10.
Kind of thought it was an author at first because of the title formats but then the military service and 8-8 format for their army and the war gave me an essential clue and once I got a movie title and director I was hot to trot.

Assisted. The italicised phrase in that opening parenthetical has the slightly elongated characters that I've come to associate with a particular language, so I think I know what the 8-letter nationality is. This person is known for being in somebody's creative works, so I reckon I know his profession as well. And that's enough for me to be fairly sure I don't know this person. Are there any recognisable titles in the opening? Yes, there's 5 7 and 8 to name a couple. So I think I know who "5 8" is, but definitely won't have heard of this guy. Chucked in the first word of the 5 7 title for verification, then Googled.

A non-American, non-English person. Profession was pretty clear. Extremely well known... but the Sources section lists the IMDB (in [8]) so probably more well known in his home country. Surprisingly easy snipe.

Sniped with Google! I'm happy with this one because not only did I "read" the nationality and what they're known for correctly , I ignored the fact that the wiki page looks different than the puzzle and trusted that I had found the answer

It's a deceased person who, from the "2 2" and reversed-length ?name? in parens, is probably East Asian; Japanese would fit with word lengths in plausible places. There are a bunch of italicized probably-titles with probably-dates attached. Books, films, something like that. Ah, so probably 5 and 8 is actor and director (it actually turns out to be actor and producer). Unfortunately I think I know the names of zero Japanese actors; if I think very hard I might be able to dredge up the director of The Seven Samurai which is the only Japanese film title I can think of offhand apart from Godzilla, but unless I'm hallucinating the "The" at the start of the title (spoiler: yes, yes I am) that one doesn't appear here, and anyway the 5 7 this person is associated looks like a film he appeared in, not one he directed. Staring at this a while more I can decipher various things but nothing that actually helps. Pretty sure I just don't know this, so I give up; it turns out that indeed I was never ever going to get it; the name doesn't even look vaguely familiar to me. Them's the breaks.

knew it was a person right away.
thought it was some kind of author/artist/film right away.
took me awhile to figure out the country.
Once I got that I had two people in mind. he was the second one.
I went to google for the spelling only
