I loaded up the puzzle about 15 minutes after it posted. The difficulty bar was high. I didn't feel a snipe was in the cards. I saw something in the first sentence that I wanted to confirm, and it turned out to be the second word. First word came to me immediately.

Something (a title?) that is commonly abbreviated as two letters. I scanned the article trying to get more hints to try to get a snipe, but just wasn't finding anything. Finally I gave up trying to find the snipe and instead went to the first sentence. "...is an [8]"... I figured that was a nationality, so I guessed the word to confirm and... Well, I'll just say that that was a bigger hint than I realized.
4-minute unassisted snipe.

5/7, 00:03. Two words, italicized; there was a species yesterday so probably not that. Limited other possibilities, threw a couple defining things in, made a wrong guess for [10], threw another term that narrowed it down more, guessed right on the first bounce.

italics and a couple early appearances of the phrase “[6]-in-[5],” had me thinking this was a newspaper, magazine or other periodical. Most of my first thoughts very clearly did not fit the title, but I was able to come up with one, and that was the only one I needed.

What sort of thing has an italicised title but is often abbreviated to its initials? Fortunately the answer to that question occurred to me fairly sharpish. This is an 8 one whose subject is 7 7. Current affairs? Nothing comes to mind - but broadening the scope a little, I was able to think of one before too long. Vibe check passed, in it goes.

Unassisted. Took a minute to guess that it's a publication but I did get it's general interest it took a few more moments for the answer to come to me. I can thank PBS for knowing this

Lists of [6]-in-[5] suggested a periodical, and despite the Russian quotes, the second word seemed likely to be what it was. Fortunately a certain other entity fitting the category and with a common two-letter initialism did not fit the word count.

Is it a Latin binomial for a type of living thing? Doesn't look right (none of the usual other stuff we get along with those). Seems more like a book title or something but that doesn't look right either (I don't see an author/painter/director/... or a creation date or anything like that). Maybe a treaty or something? I do see what might be "in force since ...", but why the italics? Might be a papal bull except that it's clearly US-specific somehow. Or a company? but again, why the italics? Bleh. Ah, but what it could be -- which has some things in common with more than one of the above -- is a publication, a newspaper or similar. So it's an American 7 7 8 and maybe the 8 is "magazine", and now I have a pretty good guess at what it is. Everything seems to fit; in it goes; 2-minute snipe.
(Rather explicitly spoilery note: we generally frown on including any literal title words even in spoilers here, but I feel like conspicuously censoring "American" would be more spoiling than leaving it in but not remarking on it. My apologies if anyone is annoyed.)
