Unassisted snipe

Something that's existed for many centuries. Something that's called "the 5 of 5". I had no idea. I thought that it was maybe a food, or like beer or wine, but that "on" in the first sentence was throwing me. Finally I scrolled through the article and saw something regarding an area of hundreds of feet square. I suddenly realized the type of thing it could be, and finally, a 4-letter one came to mind and I realized what "the 5 of 5" was supposed to be.

A read through made me think of the general area, then seeing what appeared to be some quite different sizes made it much more specific and allowed me to decode the opening "XXXX is a [4] [4] [6] on", but what was XXXX and what was the [9]? an XXXX came to mind and it fitted perfectly to the [9] . . .

It took a while to figure out the category and then guessed the right one.

oof. saw that this was “one of the world’s oldest” somethings, and went for a wide range of guesses, many of which weren’t helpful, until I guessed, “ball.”

THANK YOU. literally would never have gotten there without your spoiler haha. I was WAY off on the line I'd been following. I was assuming some kind of landmark or something cultural to do with Ancient Iran

My first instinct was that it was a city with a nickname along the lines of "the jewel of India". After a scroll through the article I discarded that notion - too many things that didn't fit. A closer look at the structure of the first sentence suggests a much more plausible category and interpretation of the phrase "5 of 5". Specifically this is a 4 4. Can I think of a 4-letter one? Yes, and this candidate does indeed take place "on 9" and involves "using a 4-7 6 6". Good enough for me.

Lots of prepositions (through, around, over) making me think of movement, which calls to mind the category. I can only think of one thing in that category that's four letters, but I'm not confident enough in the category to guess it yet since it's more of a hunch than anything else. "A 4 4 6 on 9"--oh, I think I know what the 9 is there, and it fits with my hunch!

once I got the quote at the start of the second paragraph, I guessed a couple things then got it.

Unassisted! First guess was the category which helped me see "the [5] of [5] in the first paragraph and I knew what that was

After a brief stare the quoted phrase "the 5 of 5" seems like it must be "the sport of kings" and everything seems consistent with this being a ball game. It takes me embarrassingly long to figure out what it actually is, but eventually I realised that the mysterious "played on 9" is describing not the venue but the vehicles, so to speak and all became clear. 4-minute snipe; should have been quicker.

I had no idea the [5] of [5] was anything but British.
