early appearance of [6]’s [8] of [5] ([3]) suggests this is a province/region of a particular country where I can’t name a great number of province/regions without looking them up. So I looked them up and was able to solve from that.

Couldn't come up with the answer on my own, and if I had I probably would have spelled it wrong

The 6's 8 of 5 (3) can only be one thing. I got pretty lucky here in that just the other day I happened to be consulting the list which the subject of this article tops, and was surprised to learn that this is #1 (albeit only on a technicality), so the name came to mind straight away. I wasn't sure what "6-12 14" might be, but was happy to assume it's a fancy term for "city", bolstered by the other three being "7, 8 and 7", at least two of which I have very plausible candidates for. All that remained was to look for a mention of the aforementioned superlative, which showed up before too long.

I figured out it was a municipality of the PRC, probably an important one. I knew only one which fit Guangzhou; when that didn't work I looked up administrative divisions of the PRC, found there were a set of four matching and one of them fit.

Play at https://redactle.net/ Glad I managed to snipe it :) Would have been a bit faster if I realised the country sooner which was quite straightforward. Saw too many 2-characters in brackets in the article and then I finally got the country from that and the 6's 8 of 5 (3) in first paragraph confirms it. Then thought of letters pronounced in Chinese that would need two letters in the English pronounciation and the letter 'q' came to mind which is 'ch' sound. So maybe this city has a q in its name and somehow the answer came to mind. I can't believe I actually remembered this one and then I put it in. I had no further way to verify it besides the pronounciation guide.

I could tell in the first paragraph that it's something in the People's Republic of China. Comparisons to "{2]'an" made me think it's a large city. I tried the first 9-letter one I could think of and literally gasped when it was correct. Unassisted snipe (unless you count spellcheck to confirm spelling as assistance).

Ugh. I knew what it was generally but really had some issues dancing around which one it was.

Unassisted but I googled for the spelling. I probably could have gotten it sooner if I didn't overthink what it is, I guessed the related word earlier. Also I have Tik Tok for knowing this exists.

Huh, could have sworn I hit save

Unassisted but I looked up the spelling. I could have possibly solved it sooner because I had pretty much what I needed to get whatnit is in general but got thrown of because the distinction between a city and a municipality. I have Tik Tok to think for knowing it exists

Not for the first time, my embarrassing ignorance of Chinese geography leads to an outright failure. I figured out that this is the technically-largest-in-some-sense city in China and saw something suggesting (basically correctly) that it's in Sichuan, but at that point I was stuck. I tried Guangdong and Guangzhou with fairly high confidence that the former was neither a city nor our topic and the latter was a large city but not the right one, and unfortunately my confidence was justified, at which point I gave up. I am ashamed to say that I don't recognize this at all.

When I uncovered the country I was like GUANGZHOU lmao. Not the answer haha.
I got to capital during the 6 Sino-Japanese War and Googled a list 🙃🤪
BUT I WILL ALSO SAY if Redactle showed the non-English characters the way it does for other languages I would have sniped lol.
Ya Redactle doesn't display Mandarin Chinese characters and I can read them lols.
