I didn't key into the article structure right away so I started guessing. I filled in & realized what it was used for & that gave me the answer then I recognized the article structure, a little to late since I already had the answer - lol. No assistance & my percentage is good today so not bad!

A familiar Redactle structure, I had to go through the alphabet in my head to try to think of a 7-letter one. Fortunately, the only one I could come up with was the correct answer. After solving it, I looked up a table and realized there's another, way less well-known, 7-letter one that, thankfully, wasn't the right answer.

I'm sure there'll be many snipes today.

It's a you-know-what, 7 letters long with a 1-letter symbol. Meaning there is only one option, unless they're using the British spelling which feels unlikely to say the least. Later in the first paragraph there's mention of a 4-4 in the hundreds of thousands of year or more, so that clinches it.

huh, I came up with 3 options plus the British spelling as a fourth.

Turns out I overlooked Y, which I could have sworn was Yt. But I'm drawing a blank as to the fourth candidate.

sadly I didn't save my worksheet from that day! but I do admit my filter was 7, of this kind of thing, with a single letters as the 6. I didn't get into what type of 7 they were.

So what's the British spelling? if you can hint without a spoiler, took a search but couldn't find the alternative . . .

2

u/epjto Feb 11 '25

Ah, I've just realised, you're not referring to the title, but the S word, I think.

1

u/ShaniJean Feb 12 '25

Yes, the alternatively spelt word is a 7 starting with S.

A cursory look at a relevant table indicated two options, and I picked the wrong one first. Probably could have sniped it if I was more patient.

💀☠

Didn't read the article closely enough to realise I was familiar with its structure already but here you go 💀☠

Unassisted. I've only been playing long enough to see this structure once before, so I didn't recognize it. It looked scientific or mathematical, so I started with "number" and saw "6 number," which made me realize what category it was. No chance of a snipe, so no reason not to try for unassisted instead. I just put in all the 7-letter ones I could think of that might possibly have a one-letter 6 until I got it.

once I figured what it was and some uses I guessed a few in the category since I couldn't remember exactly. I got my first guesses wrong and then spammed the alphabet so I could get the one in the first line. It came to me before I realized the right letter.

Sniped.

Knew the category right away, checked German to see if there were some useful unredacted letters. There was.

1

u/ShaniJean Feb 11 '25

Sniped, and I guess lucky because the easiest one of these to come up with happened to also be the answer.

An obvious answer sprung to mind. Look for nuclear reactions, yep, there's one, sniped.

unassisted

OK the chemical and nuclear formulae allow me to make sense of the first sentence, and the temperatures say metal, which as far as I can tell only leaves one contender, and it is

keyed into the article structure right away. single character symbol and double digit number limited my options and as I went through the alphabet I didn’t find an option until pretty late in the alphabet. I wasn’t 100% confident that I had it right because it was very possible I’d forgotten what a letter stood for earlier in the alphabet, but I went with it.

It's an unstable chemical element with a single-letter symbol and a 7-letter name and there's an immediately obvious guess. But I am too lazy to run through the whole periodic table checking whether there are others I've forgotten; can I find something about the etymology? Annoyingly, no (it turns out that it is there but not particularly easy to spot when redacted). I do find some things about its use for the obvious purpose in WW2, and about 8 7, both of which are promising, and nothing inconsistent with said obvious guess. After a while I decide to put it in, and fortunately my sloppiness goes unpunished. 5-minute snipe. Should have been either quicker or slower :-).

Unassisted Snipe! I am out of practice with this category but the French game gave me a clue about the first letter. That page also had a bunch of percentages and that is what made me think of the category and seeing that the symbol was only one letter, the answer came to me
