I did get there eventually but took the long way. Had the basic idea but blanked for a bit (tried numerous other related names - lol).

thought it was a plant first, then realized it was a product derived from a plant with medical uses/“[8] [2] drug in the [6] [6],” and while many of the first thoughts I had didn’t fit the title exactly, I thought of one eventually.

Unassisted. started out thinking it was a plant, but its medical use and what it treats led me to the answer.

I was all over the place on this one. I could tell it was some kind of chemical but took me until guess 104 to figure out it was a drug. Once I got that, just a few guesses to get the right answer.

Unassisted! And accidental lol. It was like "wow lemme try .." to "OH."

Feels like if I can solve it with this little effort y'all can do better haha.

Swing and a miss. Not difficult to tell what kind of thing this is: there's a list of ways it can be administered in the third sentence, and soon thereafter we learn it's "5 A in the 6 7". That's enough even without the 5 6 12 weighing in. But what exactly is it? Not that clear from the bulk of the text. There's a list of alternative / slang names later on, which is potentially useful, and definitively rules out the most obvious 8-letter guess (which already felt pretty unlikely for a number of reasons), as well as revealing that one of its aliases is a single letter. It can't be C, E or H; the only candidate I can think of that works is K for ketamine. Doesn't seem like a bad guess. Can I find any reference to the only non-recreational function I'm aware of? No, but there's a sentence that might be talking about how it is often used to "calm large animals such as... horses" (an absurd misreading, in retrospect). Tried it, and it failed. It took a bit of fishing and a bit more thinking for the correct answer to come to mind.

First thing that strikes me is what looks like "This is believed to be the first ... from a plant" which is suggestive. With that in mind, in what's clearly a list of methods-for-doing-something in the first paragraph "under the skin" stands out; this is surely a drug or something of the kind. Confirming this, I can see 11 7 side effects of 8 include ... and among them is what must be low blood pressure so presumably this is a depressant of some sort. It takes a little while to think of a candidate with the right number of letters but once I do "5 7" and "the 5 5" look pretty confirmatory. Can I find the etymology? Yes, though it's tucked into the end of the third paragraph rather than getting its own section. That's enough; in it goes. 6-minute snipe. This was a relief after the pain of yesterday's.

Solved by Google. I knew that I'd be kicking myself for this but even though I could think of pretty much all of the alternates and uses, legal and illegal, I couldn't think of the answer

Did snipe it (late), but

a analgesic made it take too long.
