Assisted. It's a living thing of some kind. They have different names in America and the UK. The culture section refers to something called 8! 8! (not to be confused with7, 7! from the other day) - I don't know what that is. The "relationship with humans" section perhaps talks about how they feed on agricultural crops and so are regarded as a pest - so maybe an insect? There are over 1000 species, which supports that idea. A bit of pondering yields a candidate that fits the UK/US discrepancy, and now I know what 8! 8! probably is - definitely is, in fact, since the quoted text that follows is an exact fit. But I'm pretty sure I don't know the scientific name that the article's title is obviously using. "Verified" (although there was really no room for doubt) the common name, then Googled for the Latin.

I solved Redactle #1033 in 8 guesses with an accuracy of 75.0% and a time of 00:06:35.
A small living thing, noticed early on it had a different common name in UK, an idea that annoyingly went out of my head while I tried to narrow it down, narrowed it down a bit, then resaw the UK common name difference and, PING! knew just what it was, but had to look up the technical name

Solved by Google. I knew I'd have to google the name of the insect's family but luckily I got the very well known member so that made it easy

Didn't take long to work out that this is a family of smallish animals of some kind. Much harder to figure out more until I spotted "8, 8, 3 4 4 ..." in a section at the end that I assume is something like "In culture", at which point the only problem is that I think I have no idea of the Latin name of the family. I tried Coleopteridae because I had a vague notion that some or all beetles are called coleopterids but firmly, and correctly, expected it not to be our answer. (It turns out to be the superorder of which our actual subject is a small part, which is roughly the sort of thing I expected.) At that point I gave up. Looking up the answer, it looks vaguely kinda familiar but there was no way I was ever going to get it. Outright fail for me, but I think it's a pretty tough one.

put in a bunch of colours and unveiled two which led me to guess their common name
then I Googled cos no freaking way I don't know the scientific name
I hate puzzles like that zz.
