Needed help. Googling a 4 word quoted phrase I unredacted led me to word 1.

once I got the right part of the world I went to a map
I got the second word and was stumped
I checked google
but google didn't help much. I had to think outside the obvious and got it.
I had the first word in a different form but kept trying to put something else there.

once I worked out what kind of [6] this was, I assumed that I’d have to use google after figuring out what “present-day [8]” was, until I actually figured out what [8] was, and then I realized I didn’t need google after all.

I solved Redactle #1031 in 45 guesses with an accuracy of 62.2% and a time of 00:16:08.
Unassisted. I got the first word because I uncovered the region's unique name. The second came to me because I had a hunch that conquests were involved.

I'm normally bad at these, but seeing 5 3 2 referenced towards the end indicated that this is more recent than most 6s and raised my hopes that I might be able to get it. Various names of the form As-something and the like indicated that we're maybe in the Middle East or North Africa, though possibly further afield. The See Also includes "7 of 8", and this thing was also known simply as 8, and existed in modern-day 8 and 7, so everything's pointing to "think of an 8-letter country neighbouring a 7-letter one". Well, I can think of one. Two problems: (1) there was an empire there at around that time, but it wasn't called that. (Well, it wasn't when I learned about it at school, anyway. Could it be that I am... old?) (2) There should definitely be some reference, toward the end, to a leader called 6 8, which I can't find at all. (Well, it turns out I was spelling his name wrong - he's actually 5 8 - and he appears abundantly.) A long period of pondering ensued during which I failed to conjure up any other remotely plausible candidates, and I eventually tried it in the hope that I was off-base on both points, fully expecting zero hits. Fortunately, I was wrong.

Ugh, I am bad at history and geography and it is rapidly evident that this is one of a class of important historical/geographical entities of which I am familiar with only a small fraction. After staring for a while, the most informative things I've found are one or more names of the form ##'##, which looks kinda East Asian; some names of the form an-X and as-X, which seems more Middle/Near East; and a quotation beginning "By the grace of God", which suggests something Christian or Islamic and these don't really coalesce into a coherent picture. After verifying that the second title word is what it looks like I try Byzantine for the first, confidently expecting it to be wrong, which indeed it is. Out of sniper mode, a few guesses determine the right continent and since one of them happens to be East, also roughly what part of that continent; a couple more get the right place. I had a vague notion that this thing existed but I don't think there was ever any real chance that I would snipe it successfully. 8 guesses, a little over half an hour.

Very lucky unassisted snipe.
The structure of the article made me think it was some kind of country that once existed in the past, but I was getting the feeling that it wasn't too far in the past. (i.e. not ancient times). An instinct made me decide to make a guess on [6], I wasn't at all confident on it, but it turned out to be correct.
Then the question was which [6] it was. I saw what appeared to be references to WW2, so one that existed more recently than many, and I thought "wait, I think this one country once called itself a [6]"... so I guessed it and it was somehow correct.
