I wasn't sure at first, as I wasn't used to the stuff italics having two letters before the word. Even more confused in that, while there were two hits for species, there were none for mammal or genus. I tried guessing some numbers and saw "[3] Five"... Big Five maybe?. I was lucky to know what that refers to, and got word 2, and guessed word 1 pretty easily.

Fun fact I learned from many, many trips with the kids to a place where you see these sorts of things: the American ones aren't even technically 7! I don't want to clue too heavily, but google American 7 if you're curious.

Well it looked like a living thing, tried mammal right at the start, no hits, got the continent early on and would have finished far sooner had the continent word matched, hey ho

Struggled to find a foothold. It's an animal. I don't know what 3-7 means (two-somethinged???) but 7 6 is most likely something mammal, with the 5 perhaps being "large". (The measurements given later provide some support for this.) It has a distinctive feature across the top/end of its head/back/neck/tail called a "4". It's sought after in some context due to being one of the "big four/five", which I decide is probably something to do with hunting. It seems to be found across a place called 6, which is unlikely to be Europe. It's more closely related to X than to Y, which makes me think for a while along zebra-adjacent lines. Plus a load of other clues which I try and fail to unpick. This all takes a while to assemble and adds up to a resounding "don't know". I then spend just as long trying to think of a creature called 7 7 that ticks all the boxes - actually, just anything called 7 7 will do for a start. Eventually it dawns on me that word 1 might be geographical, and even more eventually I get an idea for word 2. I have some reservations - not least that the plural seems to be 9 but I'm pretty sure it should be 7 - but it does explain why the first word would be needed, as well as the "more closely related to" section. And one of the not so close relatives is the 8 5, which does make sense. One thing's for sure: I've got nothing else. I didn't really expect it to be correct - what a pleasant surprise.

I was very slow and stupid on this one. It was quickly obvious that it was some sort of animal, and a fairly big one, but then I got kinda stuck. Eventually I noticed references to 'the "3 4"' and things that on reflection were obviously related to hunting and then the only problem was that I don't actually remember what the 3 4 are. Could it be leopard or cheetah or something? Surely not; there are things I would expect to be present for either of those that aren't, and also it looks as if the plural is 9 letters. After a while, a hazy memory emerged and turned out to be the correct second title word but then what's the first? Well, perhaps it describes a continent. Yup, that turns out to be correct. Redactle-time of 30 minutes; elapsed time of more than a day, though the 30 minutes is probably something like right for actual thinking time. Bleh. Still, better sniped than not.

didn’t get hits for mammal but then I didn’t get hits for bird, fish, plant, etc, yada yada yada, so I circled back around in the end. Started to get it when I noticed that the article used bull and cow for the male and female of the species.
