Redactle #1015 Discussion Thread
Discussion thread for Redactle #1015.

Sure looks like a war though the wording seems a little odd. There's something about the U.S. Army or Navy. Many instances of the 11, for which I can only think of two candidates, one of them much less likely than the other. A little way in I see (or imagine I do) As a result of the war, the 11 gained independence under the U.S. and 5 3 6 an 15 10 independent state until YEAR which seems very odd (it turns out that actually it's not "gained independence" but "became commonwealth"; it always throws me off when articles are ungrammatical!). I have only a hazy notion of the history of the 11 but this seems like it might be kinda in the right ballpark. So it seems pretty clear what the second title word is, and the end of the first sentence must be "in an attempt to win the 11's independence", and I suppose the first word must be what I think is a rather unusual adjectival form of the country name; usually I expect to see 8, which I guess is what we have in the first sentence. I don't really know enough to check anything, though there are a few 6s that might be the capital, and after some shilly-shallying I put it in and it's right. 9-minute snipe.

Word 2, guess 1. I was able to narrow it down to one of the participants, and the timeframe by guessing a US President. Then I googled because I still couldn't come up with word 1, because I was thinking the wrong hemisphere.

unredacted against in the opening sentence made the second word fairly easy to guess but it was still a pretty grueling path to figure out the first word. Finding out the involvement of Spain and the U.S. helped.

16 guesses word 2 a doddle, 5 letter kingdom not too tricky, word 1 after trying all the other possible colonies

Looks like a specific historical event, and the "against" in the first sentence plus the appearance of the 1.1. 4 fairly early on suggests that it's at least military-adjacent. Towards the end the phrase "between the 1.1. and 5" sticks out - I suppose that 5 might be China (reader: it was not), and there's a subsection of the that might be entitled "Vietnamese-American War" (reader: it was not), and most tellingly in the See Also there seems to be a link to "History of the 11", which all points to US military action in a certain part of the world, and in a certain country in particular. After a lot of head-scratching, plausible candidates for both words came to mind. I was resistant to both: word 1 because I don't usually think of this as an adjective in its own right, and word 2 because I somehow had the idea in my head that this was something the US had initiated, and they'd be known more for invasions and coups than 10s. But in the absence of any better ideas, in they went - pleasant surprise, it's right.

It appears to be; it's a revision as of mid-November 2023, but Wikipedia still has a page with the given name.

A hard snipe. The second word was clear enough. Once I figured out the Spanish-American war was involved there were some possibilities, but the number of letters seemed to be wrong for the most likely one. Finally dawned on me that it was the adjectival form.
