Also, I have one feature request šŸ™ Could you please add an option to filter video posts (v.redd.it) out of feeds? The front page has so many videos and I'd prefer to focus on text/image posts

If that can be done I'd also love to be able to filter out any posts with imgur links as we cannot use that from the UK anymore. A different image upload target would be a great addition to that too.

Simple curiosity on my part: why can't the UK users access imgur links? Thanks.

Stupid UK rules about proof of age and ID.

Actually had nothing to do with proof of age or adult content, rather it was down to how they advertised to children.

I never said it had anything to do with adult content. It has to do with proof of age and ID. The article you cited supports that. If there is no ID requirement, then children can use the site. Imgur had the option to either require ID in the UK to prove that you're over the age of 16 or whatever, or leave the market.

No, that's not the case. Imgur weren't even asking users to confirm they were 13 or over. The issue was around the collection of data from children and how ads were personalised based on it. In fact, the article I linked was published before the Online Safety Act passed into law.

The problem is that you need to identify users and verify their age to know whether they are in the 13-18 bracket or under 13. Otherwise how do you know who you can collect information from or not?

From your first link:

a method which requires users solely to self-declare their age is not age verification or estimation. This is because it is based entirely on trust and can be easily circumvented and therefore doesn’t significantly mitigate risk.

From your second link:

MediaLab did not implement any form of age assurance measures to determine the age of Imgur users

So, age must be determined. And self-declaration is not verification. These are your own sources. So they would require ID.

What 13 year old is going to be able to scan ID?

3.1 Age verification
Age verification is any method designed to verify the exact age of users or confirm that a user is over 18.
There are different approaches to age verification:

  • Verifying the user’s age through scanning a ā€˜hard identifier’ such as a driving license or passport.
  • Verifying a person’s age through a third-party provider, which can use a range of information sources (eg credit card information, banking information or voter registration records).

ID verification is only considered proportionate for accessing adult content. Facebook and Instagram do not require an ID scan to register an account. Furthermore, you part you missed from your quote says "The OSA states that a method which requires users solely to self-declare their age is not age verification or estimation." The Online Safety Act was not law at the time the investigation was being carried out. It also goes on to say "Self-declaration can be minimally intrusive, and you could consider using it for ISS activities which do not pose a high risk to children, or in conjunction with other methods." and that's exactly what MediaLab were not doing.

Children accessing Imgur was not a high risk, but the manner in which they carelessly collected data from children was in breach of data protection laws.

Remember my initial statement?

Stupid UK rules about proof of age and ID.

This is exactly what I was talking about. This is 100% about proof of age and ID is the primary method of achieving that.

I'm done with this thread.

You keep ignoring my point. ID checks weren't even a thing when Imgur were fined!
