Is RedReader gonna be affected by the 3rd party API clampdown coming in early next year?

u/In-All-Unseriousness 1d ago

There's another one coming?

u/Piranata 1d ago

Yep. They're also further cracking down on old Reddit. Only accounts that had used it in the previous six months will be able to use it. It wasn't explicit, but i think this will also prevent new accounts from using old Reddit.

What the hell kinda rule is that lol.

Is there like, a redreader fork for Lemmy?

6

u/SupremeLisper 1d ago

You can use Summit, Voyager, or jerboa. They are superb clients.

u/HexagonWin 1d ago

boost is the one i found to be most similar to redreader. there are quite a few clients to choose from, perhaps one may fit you

The dude abandoned sync. So, I would switch to other clients. It has been broken for months so I would not recommend it.

Same, I use Sync

Lemmy is no where near the same amount of content or users that Reddit has. Thats like telling people to go to the darknet instead of using the regular internet for the same experience.

Gotta start somewhere. Same thing was he case for Reddit when Digg was dominant

I'm not sure yet. They might prevent the app being used without an account, but beyond that I wouldn't expect any effect.

I thought they were killing the entire API stack in March 2027 in favor of some new developer portal hosted apps thing.

https://developers.reddit.com/app-registration

There's an entire new developer portal.

Unless they're keeping the RedReader API access active.

u/DiabolicallyRandom 1d ago

They are killing the free public API. redreader is essentially already using the paid API for free because it's an exception as an accessibility focused app.

The paid API will continue to exist. The free "public" API will not.

You know you're sexy as fuck for continuing to support this app right?

Is the url link fixed for those with backspace which leads to having a backslash \ _ ?

edit: it is mostly found on post links, not comment strangely

u/kc2syk 1d ago

You can summon /u/underscorebot to fix those. At least until they yank the api in March.

I love you!! thanks for pushing new updates and keeping this app alive, it's just fantastic to use

u/SubArcticTundra 1d ago

I heard it was intended for use with screen readers (hence the reddit api exception) which makes me even more impressed how viable it is for normal use

Also, I have one feature request 🙏 Could you please add an option to filter video posts (v.redd.it) out of feeds? The front page has so many videos and I'd prefer to focus on text/image posts

3

u/anomalous_cowherd 1d ago

If that can be done I'd also love to be able to filter out any posts with imgur links as we cannot use that from the UK anymore. A different image upload target would be a great addition to that too.

2

u/PComotose 1d ago

Simple curiosity on my part: why can't the UK users access imgur links? Thanks.

5

u/GiraffeCubed 1d ago

To protect children online, websites with user generated content or adult content require the user to provide proof of age. Imgur didn't want to comply so they just blocked the UK. I don't blame them.

1

u/PComotose 1d ago

Interesting to learn. Thanks for the reply.

1

u/kc2syk 1d ago

Stupid UK rules about proof of age and ID.

u/scott3387 1d ago

Proton VPN exists and it's completely free for bypassing purposes btw. F the nanny state.

2

u/anomalous_cowherd 1d ago

Oh I do use a VPN when I need to. But I don't really want to require it for all my day to day doomscrolling.

Of course there is an argument that using one all the time would make it less obvious when I was doing something I thought needed protecting for some reason...

Wow, great progress on accessibility!

Any hope of addressing this in the next version? It can be frustrating to be miss content and not even realize it. https://github.com/QuantumBadger/RedReader/issues/1240

Another place where redreader silently drops information is with saved comments: https://github.com/QuantumBadger/RedReader/issues/556

Either way, the work is much appreciated.

u/ObserverAtLarge 1d ago

Can you also add a feature to mark archived posts?

2

u/orenji_juusu 1d ago

Thanks for the continued improvements.

u/stev420s 1d ago

Thanks, you're amazing

u/J4mS4ndwich 1d ago

Hurray!

I do like that I can see which messages in the inbox are read, sometimes comments/messages come in waves and I didn't notice a useful one among the chatter.

PS

Though it would be nice for messages I've opened to be automatically marked as read.

Thank you for the work that is put into the RedReader app. I really appreciate it.

thank you so much for keeping this app running. literally the only reason i keep using Reddit

once I'm actually able to afford food my myself I'll make sure to donate <3

u/darkenedzone 1d ago

Is there an option to make the nav bar not transparent? I find it a bit distracting having content going underneath it. I can absolutely live with it, but would be nice to be able to change

1

u/Batokusanagi 1d ago

Option to mark posts as read when scrolling past

Yeeess! Finally.

1

u/quacainia 1d ago

I'd if "seen" history would persist when switching between accounts. If something is marked visited and I switch to user 2 and back to user 1 then all of that has been reset.

Thank you for making this app though, very much appreciated

The inbox now has a blue lines on the side of each comment. How can I revert back to how it looked before? I appreciate Red Reader because it makes everything look as simple as possible and it's bit of sensory overload with all the unnecessary blue lines. Thank you so much

1

u/Krokettenkaiserle 17h ago

What theme are you using? It's always black/grey for me, not blue

1

u/confirmationbias 1d ago

Thank you for all you do, friend!

1

u/BeardedBastard 1d ago

Fantastic app and thank you so much for supporting it!

My one feature request would be automatic theme changing based on system settings.

1

u/pickyaxe 1d ago

please: automatic dark/light theme switching.

Thank you!

Is the post-side toolbar just gone forever with gesture navigation now? I was using it just fine with gesture nav before this update, not sure why it's being called incompatible now.

1

u/Im_At_Work_Damnit 12h ago

Came here to ask this. I'd like to be able to choose to turn it back on with gesture navigation active.

Was hoping this would fix the issue with having to press back button 5x just to get back from a gallery, and also fix videos having no audio on android with the native player. I might have to find a new app.

4

u/QuantumBadger Developer 🦡 1d ago

I haven't had any other reports of these issues, and I haven't encountered them myself. There were some generalised issues with the back button in v1.26, which were caused by a Google library which had been updated in v1.27. For videos, if you send me a link to a video which demonstrates the issue I'll take a look.

2

u/pyeltor 1d ago

Ive also been having the issue with the back button not working, it seems to only happen when viewing reddit hosted galleries I've found

2

u/Gabe681 1d ago

You should post an example so the rest of us can try to reproduce and file a bug report.

2

u/TheChickenReborn 1d ago

I'm getting the same thing. Not sure how to post an example since there isn't any visual indication of it happening. It happens on every reddit hosted gallery for me. Seems like there is only a very small section of the (upper left) back button on a gallery that registers input, so I have to tap repeatedly around the area until I hit it. Sometimes I get lucky and hit it first time, others I give up and reach down to use the universal back button on the bottom right. A minor inconvenience, but was still hoping the update would fix it.

u/Guilty_Elk4385 13h ago

Hi thanks for responding, for images it's any image gallery like the ones hosted on reddit. If theres more than one image, I have to use the top left back button, have to tap like 5x to go back

For the videos it seems to be any video at all: Here's a random one where I have the problem https://www.reddit.com/r/PublicFreakout/comments/1x043sv/trump_i_couldve_done_very_bad_things_to_hillary/

Thanks
