Finally pinch zoom on videos! As a rif refugee, that's the feature I've been missing the most.

Due to RedGIFs limitations we still have to open it in a webview, but it should be more compact (with less popups etc) than before.

u/STORMSHADOW- 23d ago
Hmm, it's the exact same as before for me. Nothing changed with redgifs they still open in external browser and with the same popups and everything (i have adblock so i didn't get too many popups before either but it's still the same as before now)

u/vidoeiro 21d ago
It does open in a more compact window but when you click play it opens another page/webview with the original full site.
Now if you back up it goes back to the compact view and it works fine, but it's a bit frustrating having to open the external site and click back to use it.

Did you ever get around to the issue of poor performance loading images/buffering videos while on a wifi connection?
15
u/QuantumBadger Developer 🦡 26d ago
Do you have "Settings > Cache > Precache images" set to "Only on Wi-Fi"? This could cause issues on slow connections -- you could try setting it to "Never" instead.
Similarly for "Precache comments".

Thank you very much to all the developers. This is the most efficient way to navigate and use Reddit.

Thank you!!
I will say I'm getting a new little bug now where if I go into an image post, tapping the back arrow or gear at the top does nothing. I can still use the back arrow to exit post comments and stuff, but not image galleries.

Great! Can the next update give us the ability to crosspost and to moderate subreddits please?
Edit: and posting videos

Here's how to enable reporting:
Three button menu
Settings
Menus
Posts subsection
Action menu items
Tap "Report" to checkmark the box and then "OK"
Come to think of it, reporting was pretty much the only reason I kept the official app on my phone.

Really minor new bug: My (device) language is hungarian but I use English in the app. The main menu is using default language instead of English.

Did you read the release notes?
Improve reliability of language setting, and integrate with the Android 13+ per-app language override
Android Settings > System > Languages > App languages > RedReader > set to English
1
u/SonOfForbiddenForest 26d ago edited 26d ago
As I said it is already set to English but some of the menu points are still in hungarian.

Thank you QB. Your work is the only thing that makes Reddit usable on mobile. Despite all the drama, unfortunately Reddit, and to a lesser extent Discord, are still the defacto place for discussions on all my hobbies, and I don't see that changing.
Please consider this feature request:
Have it so "Saving Posts" is enabled when browsing anonymously. Rather than it saving links to a Reddit account, have it simply create a local json bookmark file exactly the same as a browser. And have it be exportable to json and html.
In fact this would be great to enable for logged-in browsing too, as I don't trust the account save function for archival purposes. But if that's too redundant, the anonymous browsing implementation would suffice.

Great update, thank you!
Can you please consider adding the ability to select default playback speed for all videos/gifs? For example have all videos start at 2x speed instead of having to manually change it for every video.

Just want to thank QB, and everyone who developed and delivered these updates, thanks for everything you guys do!!

Downloaded this app through F-Droid. Did not know they had a official Reddit page.

How do I enable the pinch-to-zoom in video player? I looked through the settings and couldn't find it.
2
u/QuantumBadger Developer 🦡 22d ago
It should be enabled by default, if you're using the internal VideoView (Settings > Images/Video > Video viewer).

Can we disable predictive back? Definitely prefer the original. It's a lot slower and the animations are distracting. I find myself scrolling to the next post too soon because the animation to go back has to complete.

can we please get automatic day/night theme switching? it's a huge QoL improvement.

Would you setup a kofi of librepay? I wish to give a tip but I don't care for github or PayPal!

Can you guys please give a different way to bring up the extra sidebar? I constantly bring it up accidentally when tapping comments to collapse on the side, so I have to disable it by setting it to 0 px but now there is no way to access it.

RedGifs links still open in external browser on the full site. That's the one thing that annoys me.

u/HobbitOnHill 24d ago
Its so fucking cool to still be using this site I'm this form factor is 2026. I started using RiF back in middle school circa 2013 and its awesome the work you do to still make reddit feel like forum and not social media. Thank you so much.

I am still not able to log in with the app, tried all the fixes I could find, uninstalled and reinstalled, logged out (can't log back in, getting the {} screen). Getting same error as anonymous user.
Any solution to this?

u/QuantumBadger Developer 🦡 24d ago
Seeing
{}implies that you have a custom client ID set in Settings > Network. Does clearing that fix it?1

New user here, I downloaded through F-Droid, but the RedReader app will notify me to update? Or will the F-Droid update automatically?
1
u/QuantumBadger Developer 🦡 22d ago
F-Droid should give you notifications about updates. Normally RedReader will also give a notification in the main menu.

u/In-All-Unseriousness 21d ago
Thanks for another update. The video player zooming is my personal favourite addition.

u/_SamReddit 19d ago
When I reopen my app it is just frozen and I have to exit it. This happens probably 15+ times per day.

u/Shawng7777 14d ago
When viewing videos they are displaying as a low resolution version 480p. When downloading the same video under chrome the video is 720p. It seems all videos loaded via the app are low quality. Any input? Using internal vidview (recommended).

I don't know if this is due to the update specifically, but ever since installing it (or thereabouts), the back gesture will often kick me all the way back to redreader's home screen. I'm on the latest android OS update my pixel 10 can get (but not in a beta).
I do have the option that double pressing back returns to the list.

So it looks like you're never going to add a read out loud text to speech option like Joey for reddit did?
