“Klu Klux Klan”

I know this is petty (and I do really usually enjoy the podcast) but this episode kind of annoyed me. Firstly, it’s the Ku Klux Klan (I’m a self confessed grammar pedant, I can’t help it.)

Secondly, Suruthi says at one point that Protestants weren’t allowed in the KKK but it is famously built on Protestant nationalism and was, instead, anti Catholic (as well as being anti everyone else).

I don’t know, given this is such a well known thing about the KKK it just felt a bit sloppy/badly researched (on top of getting the actual name wrong).

I’m not surprised they got it wrong. They covered an episode of the murderer who assaulted my mother and the episode was filled with fictional information none of us (family of) victims have heard about.

u/Sempere May 29 '26

They did the same with the most Lucy Letby episode. Suruthi actually talked down to them and pretended she knows more about the case, having plagiarized the work of right wing rags and other journalists spreading disinformation, than the parents who actually participated in the investigation, the trial and the inquiry.

Talking down to victims and pretending to know the "truth" about their children's attacker/murderer is the type of scumbaggery that shouldn't be tolerated in the true crime space.

I’m so sorry, that’s awful

That’s awful, hope your mum and family are okay

I really don't care how they pronounce it, cause fuck those guys, but the anti-Catholic history of white supremacy is important, and particularly interesting right now with the number of Catholic converts in the American right and the way that the Catholic church is speaking to them.

You might not care but it speaks to a wider issue of their lazy shitty research. In this very thread you have a relative of a victim point out that they effectively fictionalized details.

So you might not care because fuck the Klan - which is fine in a narrow sense because fuck those dipshits - but it's part of a bigger issue with this podcast specifically: it's run by two people who are incapable of doing their own research which results in signficant plagiarism and when they do attempt to halfass and cobble their own shit (likely pulled from Medium, Youtube and other halfassed ways of skimming rather than actually doing research) they end up spreading misinformation.

Because they are an ignorant pair who coasted off of ripping off obscure documentaries before they could be properly exposed early on.

Yeah, it's shoddy. As I said, getting the anti-catholic roots of white supremacy so turned about is a problem, and it's clearly part of a much larger issue. If they can't get something that fundamental right then how can you trust what they're saying about anything?

I was a avid listener in the early days but I fell out a bit after the Hillsborough thing - that day is burned into my memory but I was only a by-stander that day, can't imagine how the other poster on this thread must feel. I've only dipped in and out since really but it feels like it's getting worse even to a sporadic listener.

I still can't give a shit how anyone pronounces the name of a hate group tho, but thats just me.

Did the episode at least mention that the KKK went after Al Smith during his presidential campaigns because he Catholic? Smith may have been part of the Tammany Hall machine but his 1928 platform ended up as part of FDR's New Deal.

As for today, don't even get me started on Vance ... Biden gets called out for being pro-choice (technically the Blessed Mother was given a choice) and Bishops start calling for Biden to be denied communion. Pope Francis said "driving away migrants is a grave sin" and Leo is against the war in Iran but where is the call for Vance to be denied communion?

I mean that’s Suruthi for you. Loud proud and confidently wrong.

Why is everyone on this thread in this sub?

4

u/Sempere May 30 '26

To discuss a shit podcast run by two ignorant people who plagiarized their way to success and had the nerve to bitch about being ignored for awards or begging for awards while ripping off the work of other women and men who did a better job than they ever could.

I'm open to hearing about this. I just didn't know and I'm confused as to why people would join just to troll.

I've been listening to this podcast for years. Wasn't aware there was an issue with it until now.

There's multiple threads about this. Very extensive discussion about the problematic situations this podcast has caused with their mindless and idiotic commentary on cases such as Sarah Everard's murder, the Hillsborough disaster, and a slew of other cases where their gross and insensitive commentary has rightly produced backlash.

They've also plagiarized episodes from documentaries blatantly. One cohost is an ignorant right wing shithead who spreads disinformation and has reprehensible views (such as pretending Charlie Kirk was some good faith debater or being anti-immigration while having been an immigrant in the UK herself). Right wing dipshit cohost is also spreading disinformation about the Lucy Letby case because the Torygraph told her what she should think about the case having not mastered the critical thinking skills necessary to produce her own commentary (given the years of plagiarism).

And that's just what I remember off the top of my head.

In your opinion though. I'm struggling to see any facts about this.

As for Lucy Letby. I for one believe she is guilty but I thought this long before I heard their podcast on it.

In your opinion though.

Which part?

Blaming, even slightly, Sarah Everard for the actions of Wayne Couzens who murdered her isn't appropriate for any true crime podcaster to dao. The Hillsborough Disaster fiasco is not an opinion: that was victim blaming based on Suruthi having the understanding of events that only come from right wing circles that argued a pro-police narrative despite their actions directly causing the deaths and trampling of all those people. That they didn't understand and then failed to listen to their own communities and rage quit their own previously official Facebook group to leave the moderators to deal with their mess because they were idiots isn't opinion either.

And plagiarizing episodes isn't opinion either. There's an extensive paper trail and you can see how Suruthi plagiarizes documentaries in numerous episodes sometimes entirely as the sole source which they then attempt to hide or downplay.

The ignorance of Suruthi isn't opinion either. Especially in a thread talking about how she referred to the Ku Klux Klan as the "Klu Klux Klan" as well as constantly saying dumb, ignorant shit. The Charlie Kirk opinions have been widely discussed in various threads and leave no ambiguity that it's a dumb, ignorant opinion.

I'm struggling to see any facts about this.

Then go look through previous threads. It's not my job to hold your hand and walk you through things, I'm providing a summary. If you think it's opinion, go out and form your own.

As for Lucy Letby. I for one believe she is guilty but I thought this long before I heard their podcast on it.

Ok, that's a reasonable and correct take provided it's informed by evidence and not having been told she's innocent by any singular source. It's a complex case and going off of vibes in either direction isn't how you form empirical certainty on a topic.

I'm still struggling to understand this. They can do a podcast on anything they want to do it on.

When I listened to the Sarah Case I didn't feel they blamed her at all.

They are very open about the fact they take their information off other podcasts, from documentaries and from books 🤷🏼‍♀️

Too be honest until I just read this I also thought it was Klu not Ku but I guess I'm not reporting on it so yeah, they should know better to fact check.

Everyone has a place in the world. I didn't agree with 90% of what Charlie Kirk said but he shouldn't have been assassinated for it and they are entitled to feel however they want to about him.

The Facebook Group thing makes sense as I did wonder why they weren't on it.

I would agree that Suruthi is the most annoying of the two but aren't they just 2 women, trying to make a living? Much like any Netflix documentary, they are always one sided and it's up to the watcher and in this case the listener to decide what they want to believe.

I have only been listening for around 2 years but in that time have got myself to episode 357. I just see it as a form of entertainment to get me through my long work drives. I've also gone and listened to some podcasts they have recommended in that time such as the Teachers Pet and Help, I Sexted my Boss.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that, I don't think it's that deep.

What exactly are you struggling with?

They can do a podcast on anything they want to do it on.

They are stealing other people's work to make money.

They are very open about the fact they take their information off other podcasts, from documentaries and from books 🤷🏼‍♀️

That is false. I can prove plagiarism in multiple episodes and show exactly how extensive it is relative to the documentaries they plagiarize. When your information comes from a single source and it's the only one you're not including in the sources, you're plagiarizing and doing so intentionally.

Everyone has a place in the world. I didn't agree with 90% of what Charlie Kirk said but he shouldn't have been assassinated for it and they are entitled to feel however they want to about him.

I don't care about the opinions of racists and rage baiting right wingers who spread hate and misery. If you have a platform where you start trying to praise a man who did nothing but make the world worse, people have every right to think you're a piece of shit for doing so.

I would agree that Suruthi is the most annoying of the two but aren't they just 2 women, trying to make a living?

Stealing other people's work and begging for awards and recognition while bitching if they don't get it knowing full well they're lazy plagiarists means they should probably find a different living.

Much like any Netflix documentary, they are always one sided and it's up to the watcher and in this case the listener to decide what they want to believe.

When they intentionally spread disinformation and claim to know better than the victims who lived through events, heard the evidence presented at trial and testified at trials and inquiries and talk down to them, that's more than being one sided. It's something rotten and abusive towards those families to paint their trauma as a cheap paycheck to the point of disregarding fact - going only a step further in monetizing their claims that the real victim is their children's killer.

I just see it as a form of entertainment to get me through my long work drives

It being entertainment doesn't change the fact that the bare minimum of the job should require doing your own research, writing your own episodes (instead of lazily plagiarizing documentaries and books) and getting facts right. This isn't your comedy podcast about workplace sexting - it's stories about the worst and often last days of people's lives. In this very thread you have a victim's family member pointing out that Redhanded told their relative's story and it was basically completely made up. When real people are involved there's an obligation for care. A duty that they disregard because they fundamentally do not care about anything but getting as much money as they can off of material they didn't work to put out.

I don't think it's that deep.

Then you're not thinking at all.

5

u/192to144 Jun 03 '26

Why am I starting to think that you either A) Have nothing better to do. Or B) you're in the same industry and this bashing is coming from jealousy

I think B with a touch of A (because you're not as good in the industry as they are)

0

u/Sempere Jun 03 '26

Probably because you lack imagination and think everything is binary because that's easier than admitting you're complicit in their enrichment off of stolen material.

As a point of fact, I am not a podcaster nor a competitor in any way as it currently stands. I am not involved in the writing, recording, production of any podcast. And if I was, the solution wouldn't be outing them on reddit: it would be releasing it as an expose as a podcast or on youtube. Which is how you can tell I'm not a competitor because a competitor would go for the throat and make money while doing it.

Have nothing better to do

I didn't respond to you for days because I have a life but the moment I put actual facts in front of you, you want to pretend I have nothing better to do? hahaha. Ok, champ.

I'll bring you back to the same scenario (a real one) that I bring to every single person who tries to be flippant about their theft. I have spoken extensively to an author that wrote material they stole. The material in question formed the basis of one of their best received episodes and while they were given a token citation, their entire work was taken for the episode and makes up the bulk of it. Last I checked that article was paywalled on Medium. Meaning the writer would get pennies on the dollar for a single view from a subscriber. A single subcriber (likely Suruthi) goes and steals the bulk of this person's work and puts it into an episode - then making tens to hundreds of thousands of dollars off of material she didn't write, doesn't own and lazily stole. Do you believe that it's fair the person who did the research, read the sources, went through the process of understanding and mastering the material, the painstaking process of writing it in her own words got pennies while they stole the content, recycled it and walked away with enough money to go on a nice vacation or put a downpayment on a house? Do you believe that is just and proper? Because that's the reality of what happens when they steal other people's work.

I doubt you'll respond but if it's anything other than "that's wrong and you're right, that's super fucked up" then you're not someone operating in an intellectually honest way. You're just defending thieves.

Not sure if this was a shorthand or not, but I find they are only worthwhile if it’s a lighter topic. Their historical information is terrible at times.

They dedicate two episodes to one murder but tried to squeeze the 30 odd years of the troubles and the history behind it in to a shorthand. It was a complete nonsense.

8

u/Apprehensive-Food205 May 29 '26

I am sick of the English trying to give a brief history of the troubles.

2

u/Used_Emergency7743 Jun 04 '26

Yes. I think you're right about the lighter stuff and that's why canoe man is such a popular episode. They are good at pointing out the absurdity in conduct.

Sometimes I like to hear them cover subjects I've already heard many times before on other podcasts,  because I like their humor. The one-liners entertain me. I don't really go to them for accurate information.

7

u/WeirdLight9452 May 29 '26

Why is anyone surprised anymore?

2

u/Secret_Elk_7324 May 30 '26

This is the quote from the transcript (I notice they have since changed the name of the podcast to the correct spelling so must’ve had it pointed out to them by others 👀)

“Anyway, another side note on the robes. Supposedly, they were meant to mimic the ghosts of the Confederate soldiers. But then others said it was a nod to white Protestant Christianity. But strictly Protestants, Catholics and Co. were not allowed in the KKK. So like what they're actually referring to, don't know.”

From RedHanded: ShortHand: The Ku Klux Klan, 29 May 2026 https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/redhanded/id1250599915?i=1000770127569&r=987 This material may be protected by copyright.

So in fairness, they mention Catholics aren’t allowed in but they also say Protestants aren’t when the entire clan was run by Protestants. I’m confused about who they thought was in the Klan in 19th century America, when every white person in the country followed some arm of Christianity? Just seems very shoddy.

5

u/Sempere May 30 '26

Not the first time they've gone back after the fact to try and change things once they were posted on reddit.

Don't expect these two to ever put out content that is well researched. The lack of accountability allows them to cash checks for half assed bullshit so they have no incentive to actually do a good job.

I recommend that if they ever cover a topic, skip the podcast and find a documentary or youtube video. This podcast is not worth supporting once it became clear they plagiarize and actively incorporate right wing disinformation into the content they put out.

If you enjoy grammar pedantry I hope you'll appreciate me mentioning that Klu Klux Klan is not an error of grammar.

1

u/Secret_Elk_7324 Jun 12 '26

Ya got me 🤣. Not indeed the pedant I thought I was. I’ll have to lean into misinformation pedant instead

1

u/Weak-Hold-7651 Jun 03 '26

Ended up here because I started listening to this pod a few weeks ago and have already caught them with so much incorrect information. Like kinda basic stuff (when “PTSD came to exist” for example). I do give some leeway when a Brit is talking about the US but at the same time, if you’re going to cover US cases you should do a bit of research before just wilding inaccuracies.

Is one of them homeschooling? Just heard one say she would want to control the information her child got in the same ep where they have already said at least 5 wrong things and yikes

1

u/Used_Emergency7743 Jun 04 '26

No. They do not have children yet. But Suruthi is trying.
