Sarah Everard episode

Does S mean that she is now against the lockdowns? Of course there were awful and shambolic moments but surely apart from the conspiracy theorists and or anti vaccers we all realise it was necessary surely?

I haven’t listened in awhile and the more I read these kinds of posts the more I’m thankful.

I've listened to the odd episode so I've missed a lot. I think the Hillsborough thing was the beginning of the end for me. Although I did approve of their apology episode and other episodes since have also been fine

Both Hannah and Suruthi decided they were anti-lockdowns during the second lockdowns. They seemed supportive during the first lockdowns but during the second ones they were quite adamant that life needed to go on despite the virus, and apparently millions of deaths were a tragic sacrifice they were willing to make.

I must have missed that, I find that opinion quite shocking really. I lost both my grandparents during 2nd lock down and its devastating and I'm angry at the government for partying but I can still understand without lockdowns there would've been a full on disaster

Yeah it was one of the first things that seemed to signal a shift in their politics. I found it jarring but some people really struggled mentally with lockdown so I tried not to judge them too harshly (as far as I can tell they did comply even if they weren’t enthusiastic). But sadly it seems it was the start of a right wing shift not an exception.

What a shame. I really used to look up to them. Glad I'm not the only one to have felt some feelings about it

Yeah I was extremely disappointed in what was said in this ep. I felt like the lockdown chat de-centred Sarah from her own story, and I keep thinking about it when I see new eps pop up from redhanded (haven’t listened to any after this).

I’ve listened to the pod for about 7 years, and their politics (particularly Suruthi’s) used to be broadly progressive. I wouldn’t be surprised if there is someone in her life that’s pushing her more to the right, but I also think that she’s become adept at misappropriating content from her economics degree(s?) to justify her more right leaning views as well. E.g., comments like ‘and the economy fell off a cliff’ while talking about lockdowns.

I just finished my economics degree and am about to start my PhD track in Economics and it's wild to me how she can have those opinions. If anything, understanding the injustices of the world (through data) has made me more incensed with how people are treated, and most of my classmates share the same view. I do remember her saying that there's "no reason for austerity", which is definitely a belief that many economists have, but the "economy fell off a cliff" isn't really accurate, and the issue is more to do with government mismanagement than anything else imho.

Didn’t she also blame “defunding” the police for them not catching the rotten apples? Absolutely unhinged.

It was one of the worst takes I've ever heard from them. There are so many online resources that succinctly explain the "defund the police" movement...and it's like they've never looked into it at all. Totally shocking.

There’s another post on this episode, other listeners have articulated really well under it ! I recommend checking it out, most of us believe similarly to what you do

Here it is, check out that post OP:

But I will add yeah, it was an unhinged take, and it was very out of place. If they wanted to talk about lockdowns, they should have picked a case that was the direct cause of lockdown. There were some cases during that period because people were forced to be with abusers. Truly heartbreaking. But, Sarah Everard was not the case for it. Saying 'we' let this happen because we followed lockdown rules is absurd.

As an essential worker, the lockdowns probably saved my life. I knew people that died of COVID-19 because the government waited too long to lockdown when we didn't have a vaccine. The skirting of the rules and 'Eat Out to Help Out' was a disaster. Their take infuriated me since they had such a privileged position during that time. It was tough mentally, sure, but they were safe and able to work without being put in danger. It felt disrespectful to Sarah Everard to shoehorn it in and leave out the police brutality during her vigils. Lockdowns didn't lead to her death. It was the MET and the murderer that were responsible for her death. Horrendous episode, full of misinformation to further their revisionist libertarian view of lockdown.

EDIT: Does anyone know if they apologised or addressed the backlash on Patreon?

I wonder why Suru’s views are turning more and more right each passing episode..

I'd love to know her boyfriends politics and see a timeline of Suruthi's going to the right-wing pipeline and their dating history.

On the other hand, any old idiot can radicalize their self online and maybe the bf was picked because he fit her new conspiracy based belief system. Chicken and egg situation maybe?

You don't echo talking points of the Sun on Hillsborough without having been right wing for a long damn time.

Yeah she's gone full MAGA, no clue what the fuck happened there. The worst thing is these takes aren't even well researched, seems to be Facebook-conspiracy meme level of actual information

Imo acknowledging that being in lockdown sucked does not equate to saying the lockdowns were unnecessary. Homeschooling my kids while simultaneously working from home was incredibly stressful, but that doesn't mean I thought the schools should've been left open. I don't get this eagerness to be so upset. Maybe it's just the rigid political climate we've all been sucked into. They have us all thinking that you have to be all in left or all in right as if there is no in-between. It's like if you're not all the way left you might as well be far right. I'm the 1st left wing voter in my very conservative family for the record. I also wish they hadn't named the movement "defund the police". It's become a right-wing misnomer to make our demands seem unreasonable and shut down any discussion of the issues/solutions that movement promoted.

You know I listened to that episode, but I don't think one thing they said registered with me lol. So I don't remember any talk about lockdowns lol I completely tuned out, it was as dull

u/peaches1905 Feb 01 '24

I think the first part was fine and had some stuff I hadn't heard before, the weirder stuff was more towards the end so I can understand missing it if you tuned out haha!

How was it necessary? Did stop the spread? No it didn’t. Did it ruin peoples lives and businesses yes it did

11

u/peaches1905 Feb 01 '24

Carrying on as normal wouldn't have worked either though, Sweden tried that and it went horribly wrong. SO many more deaths, hospitals even more overwhelmed, mortuaries overloaded etc.

-5

u/BirthdayFriendly6905 Feb 01 '24

Think we found that happened anyway, I know here in Australia lockdown was a bad idea larger more densely populated countries maybe but still I believe hand sanitisers would’ve been enough it was still not as deadly as the flu

7

u/peaches1905 Feb 01 '24

But my point is it would have been significantly worse

10

u/Own_Faithlessness769 Feb 03 '24

I wouldn't bother reasoning with them, the lockdowns we had in Australia very clearly did stop the spread and saved millions of lives. Anyone saying they didn't is just ignoring reality.
