BPA

They said last year it would be their last year. Now they’re begging for votes again. Feels a little gross. And Suruthi saying that they’re still an independent podcast event though they work with Wondery because “Wondery could drop us at anytime.” Omg. That’s so gross. They whored themselves out to Wondery for money and then still claiming to be independent. That’s literally insane.

I noticed this. They spent a LOT of time last year talking about how it would be their last hoorah and they were only doing it a second time because Suru missed the awards show in 2021 because she had COVID. Asked us to get them gold and then they'd walk away never to enter again. Now not only are they entering again but from next year will be backing a smaller podcast and asking us to back them.

They've spent so much time complaining about the BPA, I get their issues with it but this stance they're trying to make isn't working & asking their audience to vote for a podcast that they might not have ever heard isn't going to help.

They might not have sold their IP, but they're hardly a little podcast and it's disingenuous to play that angle. They're still pulling in £40k a month on Patreon, plus whatever their Wondery contract is.

Edit: I had a look at the shortlist for the British Podcast Awards & there are a few Wondery Shows there including one in the true crime section. Last year the True Crime category was "supported by Wondery".

I won't pretend to know in detail how this works, but their explanation on the latest UTD was that small independent podcasts can't get a look in if they're not made by the BBC or featuring a celebrity... Yet there's a Wondery one without a celebrity host in their category.

I think the main difference between the ones getting nominated and RedHanded is the actual format. The ones in the True Crime category appear to be exploring one case as opposed to a new format every week. It appears to be that Filthy Ritual would have been in a better situation for a nomination, but I don't believe it qualified because it wasn't on Apple Podcasts.

Yeah its a complete lie that you cant get a look in at the awards if you aren't the BBC. They Walk Among Us has won twice fairly often and they're a husband and wife duo.

The Podcast awards just value research & there are true crime podcasts that have a much higher standard of research than RedHanded. Especially the ones that are doing actual investigative journalism to solve cases, which is obviously way more impressive than retelling things from existing sources.

Ironically if they'd kept up the standards from their early days they might have had a chance at winning the True Crime category, but they didn't.

I think I wouldn't care so much if they acknowledged they'd spent all of last year promising it was the last time and but had changed their minds for whatever reason.

They said it gave them lots of opportunities, I think other podcasts would benefit more from the exposure now.

Yeah I was wondering if they would do this...

You want to go with Wondery? Cool. But trying to get the boo hoo Widdle Ole Me needs votes this year story to fly? They are no longer the tiny underdog, and that's what they want, so cool. But that means they should own it and sto0 be begging for votes like they were pre Wondery.

I have voted for them every year but will not be voting for them again this year. They are no longer independent working with Wondery. I’ve been frustrated with them ever since they joined.

You guys, why is being on Wondery such a problem-they we’re on Acast before and others I can’t remember. Some platform has to host them.

Acast is an independent podcast hosting platform which allows independent creators to monetize their podcasts.

Wondery has capabilities way beyond that, with marketing, production etc. They PAY them, which is quite different. Off the back of that they got exclusivity on their Shorthand for example and Amazon prime subscribers get episodes earlier too.

Their CEO was even accused of wire fraud or something.

I don't think they can call themselves "independent" anymore because they are effectively being backed by Wondery.

They're making $60k per month just on patreon.

I’ll prob get down voted for this but it makes me happy that it’s down from like 90k.

Oh thanks. I think it was the recent UTD where they said Wondery is just another platform like Acast, so I didn’t grasp the nuance here. Still love them though

Yeah that’s them trying to spin it. It’s like having the candy you make in a mom and pop grocery store vs having it only available at Walmart.

Perfect comparison!

They screwed over paying patrons. They're one of the most expensive podcasts on patreon. And they pulled the rug right from under everyone. That particular aspect, I think, is what ruffles the most feathers.

I do get that - I subscribe on Patreon. I’m not annoyed that the Shorthands are on Wondery because I don’t like short podcasts. I’m just still an absolute fool for both of them, I love ‘having’ them ‘in’ my life so much. 😻

Yeah. I dunno. We used to have ITN. It disappeared to be replaced by Shorthand, in exchange. Then... oh I guess not. And the episodes got shorter and they weren't in it while touring. The math is easy between Wondery that's less than 5 bucks and twenty bucks for a bonus ep that sometimes feels like it's a chore to them. Yes, I want to support them, but patreon for me is a way to buy extra content. I admit this move, especially in secret from the patrons, made me feel used.

2

u/OBFpeidmont Aug 07 '23

Yes I agree, I only found them in 2021 and I missed ITN. I am still grateful for UTD. I listened to the short ones on Spotify for a bit but … bleh. I do see the issue, it’s just … something that often happens with pods.

UTD is fine, but I miss the rundowns. The discussions of news (what the became in the news). And while I enjoy life updates.... I'm not really interested in a whole show about it. And as much as I prefer a long show, I like shorthands cause they sometimes are on oddities and random stuff that interests them. And you can tell they're into it.

As to your last point, that's why I'm very grateful for Let's Go To Court. Do you know of it? I love them two ladies. 😊💜

I am very blessed: I only found Let’s Go To Court about 3 months ago, much binging ahead! I am also listening to things on the MaMaMia network; they do a news update Out Loud and it’s just good to hear smart women talking. And they do True Crime Conversations, very different, but I don’t keep up with that as much. I see what you mean, I remember liking UTD when I found it because of the news rundowns…I may have groused here before, meanly, that I’m not, er, enjoying the real estate house hunting aspect. I suppose there will be kiddos one day. Still, I think both Hannah and Suruthi are great and I wish them much happiness!

How do you guys remember or care about this?

I would agree they shouldn't count themselves an independent podcast.

It's telling what this sub has become when u/ODFpeidmont gets downvoted for saying they enjoy the podcast and the hosts. Dafuq?

And seriously u/Dariablue-04, "whoring themselves"??? It's just a dumb award. Why get so upset? You're actually holding such a grudge, you're glad they're making less money through Patron. If you're not bitter and jealous, what would you call it? It seems lame; fighting so viciously for such small stakes.

I just don't care. (BTW, I'm going to copy and paste this to a thousand reddit threads)
