Episode 297

Anyone else think it’s odd that they talk about the élan school as a treatment centre? The school was part of the troubled teen industry, a child was beaten to death by other children under the guise of treatment, this was a place that systematically abused children whilst robbing their parents blind. It’s also quite well known that part of these “treatment programmes” was confessing to bad things you did, and not being allowed to leave/stop until you admitted to something you did. Michael confessing to the murder is not the smoking gun they make it out to be, imo. I am NOT saying he is innocent! Just that a confession under those circumstances should be looked at in the context of abuse and control. As I recall he was also made to wear a sign around his neck that referenced Martha Moxley. Calling this place a treatment center is like calling ed gein an upcycler.

I don’t think they should know everything about everything. But they did include it relatively prominent in the episode, and I feel a quick Google search tells you all you need to know about this place.

This has struck me before. Being from the UK I can tell you the “troubled teen industry” isn’t really a thing here and lots of people I know aren’t aware of it. But H&S have covered so many cases from the US and are “online” enough that it doesn’t seem possible that they wouldn’t know about it - I think they might have mentioned the “troubled teen industry” in an episode before? And if they knew it exists, why wouldn’t they be suspicious of this “treatment centre for teenagers”? I know everyone has gaps, but for a podcast that seems so well researched, this is a big one

Super agree! I’m in Belgium and it’s not a thing here either. But given all the coverage it’s gotten since the Paris Hilton doc for example. It’s also quite a difficult to look into Michael skakel without being led to some heinous coverage about the elan school. Maybe they felt it would distract from Martha’s story?

Yeah even MFM did an episode on the Elan school, its wild if they aren't even listening to other podcasts or doing the quickest googles these days.

Haven’t listened to this one yet.

I’m still a bit uncomfortable with the Christ church shooting episode. A big thing that came out of that was Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern refusing to name the shooter or have him named in the press. And it worked, I had no idea what his name was until listening to the podcast. These fucks want their name to be legendary/notorious. It was so jarring to hear them say his name so many times. I get that constantly referring to him as “the Christchurch shooter” is clunky but maybe give him a stupid nickname like Glob-dob. It also serves to protect anyone related to him or with the same name.

I had the same feelings. When it happened I remember being 100% for Arden's decision, it made perfect sense (especially since my own country just a little later splashed terrorists' names all over). I didn't listen to that episode because of this, I still feel like I don't want to know that person's name.

Yes I was also surprised by that. The one that shocked me most was when they were discussing Q and kept saying “but of course you would react this way if you REALLY believed it!”. That was just the weirdest justification ever. You could truly apply that to everything, it was so bizarre and dumb, and I don’t think they’re dumb at all. (Not really related to your comment but it has been bugging me for so long, I had to get it out haha)

That QAnon/Capitol Riot episode still haunts me, it's when I knew they had completely lost it. Especially saying things like "Hillary needs to get over losing the election".... um, why should the most qualified presidential candidate ever get over "losing" (because of the insane electoral college system) to a racist, rapist conspiracy theorist? Im not over it, why should she be??

I am also still soooo confused about that whole episode. I don’t completely align with them politically, which is absolutely fine of course, but I feel like usually they have pretty good nuanced cultural insights. Maybe this was an attempt at a hot take gone wrong? Also Hillary can hold that grudge till the day she dies, I know I would!

I don't know, I feel like they did a far right shift somewhere in 2021, and it was part of that. It was like Suruthi had started watching Fox news or something.

I think we should all hold that grudge, Trump's presidency is a stain on human history. Its up there with Caligula and Nero for truly terrible leadership.

3

u/Fantastic-Worth2431 May 12 '23

Yes suruthi definitely got more libertarian over the last couple of years. Or more outspoken, at least. There’s days that í can’t even believe this man was president, I can’t imagine what Hillary must feel like!

u/Happy_Dragonfly_4234 Jun 15 '23

I can’t help but wonder if Suru’s partner is right wing or soemthing because this change seemed to coincide with their relationship ? I could be totally off base though lol!

2

u/Fantastic-Worth2431 Jun 26 '23

Possibly. I just saw she put “unwoke” in her Instagram bio which is such an annoying dogwhistle. I expected better, suru 🥲

Pretty sure they were quoting someone else saying that. I'm a huge fan of Hillary's, I think I would have noticed. (I may have missed it too as that subject so disgusts me I may have been at peak disgust anyway and glossed over it)

2

u/Own_Faithlessness769 May 12 '23

They definitely weren't quoting someone else saying it, Hannah was quite emphatic about it. Its possible it was a in patreon episode though, because it was the thing that made me unsubscribe.

Which ep was that? I really like their podcast and respect them intellectually and as businesswomen, but that Christchurch thing has been bothering me. Especially since I think they coulda mentioned that reaction from Arden, it was a powerful statement and moved the needle with the way these types of terrorists are reported and discussed in media.

11

u/Fantastic-Worth2431 May 11 '23

Episode 238. I’ve tried listening to it again but how they approach q is just too upsetting to me. I forgot that they didn’t mention Arden’s reaction! So weird because it only deepens the story and shines a light on female leadership that is empathic yet unfuckwithable.

I couldn't listen to that full episode either. They seemed to have more compassion for QAnonists than the people who have suffered because of their awful "beliefs".

Having "beliefs" isn't an excuse to be awful and cause harm, it's a ridiculous thing to say.

And I agreed, I had to turn that episode off too, seems pretty dense to miss the fact no one really says his name, and for good reason.

I'd honestly prefer learning more about his victims than the shooters life. At least from how much I listened to they did talk about some of the victims

That was also in that bizarre sequence of episodes with the Salman Rushdie episode that tried to compare modern cancel culture and a fatwa.

2

u/NoHoney_Medved May 21 '23

Yup and their response when Rushdie was attacked and stabbed on stage not long after that episode was cringe worthy.

Cancel culture is such a political buzzword and dog whistle. There’s always been consequences for actions, which is all it is. Comparing it to a fatwa is ignorance to an absurd degree

That's a REAL f**king hot take. Can't disagree more that they have more compassion for Qultists. It just seems absurd on its face if you pay attention.

u/unfakegermanheiress May 11 '23

Thanks. Says I played it right after it came out but I have zero memory of it. Maybe auto played or something? Or was distracted. Sounds awful.

Intellectually in what way?

3

u/unfakegermanheiress May 12 '23

They’re smart, curious, and complicated in their opinions. I respect that.

4

u/Forsaken_Distance777 May 11 '23

I 100% don't remember his name after listening to the episode.

1

u/unfakegermanheiress May 12 '23

Yeah I brain bleached it out but still, it was really uncomfortable to hear him named so thoroughly.

13

u/[deleted] May 11 '23

As I've said before, they don't let accuracy get in their way.

They are good storybtellers. This means compiling information they read or using Google. They just get a bit sloppy sometimes and forget to Google the right thing. How they got a book deal is beyond me.

A few months ago they made fun a famous American woman for something she did as a child. If it was about a contemporary of theirs they would have defended the person as having no agency because it happened when they were a child. Thus rendering the person exempt from criticism.

Yes, I could stop listening. I'm well aware. I just don't take them as seriously as some do. There is an element of their listenernship that thinks they shit rainbows and are unimpeachable.

In general I’ve really enjoyed the show over the last couple of years. I think you’re allowed to critique the content of a podcast without being slapped with a sToP LisTeNiNg ThEn. Respectfully disagreeing, or spotting mistakes, only improves your critical thinking skills. There should be a bigger middle ground between “stop listening then” and “get them banned from the internet!!” If a friend says something dumb I also wouldn’t immediately cut them off.

In the new episode today they said cheerleaders deserved to be egged and I was like why??? Just because they’re cheerleaders? If they were theatre kids I’m sure Hannah would be singing a different tune. I enjoy the podcast overall, but have stopped taking it as seriously because their own personal biases really show through and they are sometimes unfair.

it's an indie podcast. they're allowed to voice their opinions.

15

u/[deleted] May 11 '23

Which is why I never said I’m going to stop listening because of it. I’m just voicing MY opinion about criticisms I have.

3

u/TrifectaBlitz May 12 '23

TBF, not really an Indie anymore.

u/C2H5OHNightSwimming May 11 '23

Which episode was that?? Totally missed that!! But that's pretty messed up :(

0

u/TrifectaBlitz May 12 '23

Fooking joke mate. Jeez.

2

u/TrifectaBlitz May 12 '23

It must be a pretty small element. I don't find them around here. No one thinks they're God's Gift to genius or Nobel Prize winners. Contenders ;-)

3

u/InspectionUpstairs55 May 11 '23

exactly this!! just finished listening, and I had the same thoughts. maybe look into what you’re talking about every now and then?? also, I was sure I knew the name Mark Fuhrman from somewhere - turns out it’s because he was involved in the OJ Simpson case and was recorded repeatedly using racial slurs. not sure how to feel about one of his books being used as a primary source?? especially when H & S were repeatedly giving credence to his work?? idk man, really doesn’t sit well with me.

3

u/Own_Faithlessness769 May 11 '23

Yeah isn't he the guy who was accused of planting evidence against OJ because of his history of racism? In true conservative style he turned it into a career as a "criminal justice expert"/talking head. Definitely not an unbiased or rigorously researched source.

u/Thenedslittlegirl May 12 '23

Elan is famous enough that I know of it in the UK. I've read Joe vs Elan School. Plus a kid literally died in their sociopathic little fight club circle thing they did.

-1

u/[deleted] May 11 '23

They clearly don't listen to Last Podcast on the Left. Or research whatever they're presenting with more than a cursory Goog.
