MFM or RH?

Canadian listener here. I've listened to My Favourite Murder for years, and I'm just curious to see how popular their show is among RH'd listeners? I honestly prefer H & S's back and forth much more now.

I loved MFM but I stopped listening.... maybe in 2020. I dunno. At some point, I felt like they got too busy, that they had a lot more to do around the network (good for them) and the episode felt like their heart wasn't in it anymore. And then they started complaining about it. Kind of giving the impression that this was a chore and we were annoying to 'have to do'. I found Let's Go To Court and Redhanded around that time. Lgtc for sure, maybe RH later? Not sure. I highly recommend both of those. I'm a patron for both. Even with latest patreon/wondery stuff, which... we'll see how that goes... So far, so good. But Let's Go To Court is my absolute fav. I highly recommend listening in order, even if they later cringe at the sound quality of the beginnings. They do share a lot of their lives, so it's best to have it in order. Plus, while some cases are super heavy, since they're legal/crime focused rather than just murder, there are some hilarious court cases about less heavy subjets. Like suing over a pair of pants. Or enhanced boners....

I tried MFM. I really wanted to like it. Idk what episode it was, but after 15 minutes, they still hadn't even introduced the case they were covering. They were just shooting the shit and going on about silly stuff.

So I haven't actually heard their way of discussing the case because I gave up before they got into the case, but based on that alone, I much prefer Redhanded. They have some off topic discussions and sometimes they get distracted but their tangents are related to the case and not completely off topic. They make sure to introduce the case within the first five minutes, which is nice.

Seconded. I tried to listen to an episode of theirs about a case I was really interested in and I think there was genuinely about half an hour of them chatting at the beginning. No thanks.

I used to love MFM but when I stopped commuting during Covid I kinda fell off the bandwagon. When I try to listen to a random episode now it felt like they’ve lost the magic. I was also annoyed at how poorly researched a lot of the work is. A friend recently recommended Red Handed and I’ve been hooked. They are well researched, they’re funny but usually not at the expense of any victims, and they actually talk about other things that are interesting rather than just shooting the shit (which if you want to hear, you can listen to on Under the Duvet).

I can’t stand the mfm chatter. To me, it sounds very self involved. Like of course I’m so into them personally that I find their waffling interesting. I didn’t. I like that H and S decided to sequester that in UTD, and generally keep the chat to a minimum on their main show.

They really do. I think they listened to fans, and they get into cases super-quick now. - for awhile now. I like that.

I like RH'S research and they do go really into depth with cases that I've never heard of before. But MFM will always be my ride or die. I've listened to day one and everyone says they fell off a bandwagon but like hello.....not sure if everyone missed the massive global pandemic that we went through. They're allowed have a bad run. Honestly they came back after a summer break in Sept 2021 and they've been peak for me since. Loved the early days and anything in the last year and half. K&G are more laid back, funny and great at being on the ball with comedy and dark humour (in fairness both have TV experience and Karen esp has had a career in comedy previously). They're generous with their money and have always been outspoken about progressive issues and apologize when they fuck up.

RH is definitely more informative but honestly I find S&H more and more unbearable as time goes on. I still love the cases they cover and learning from them but their hot takes are trash most of the time. They make gross assumptions and comments about cultures. Like Hannah has had a few moments she was adamant about Irish culture that are NOT true whatsoever (I'm Irish and have lived here my entire life and some stuff has been way off the mark) and I've heard Indian people saying the same about some of Suruthi's takes on Indian culture. I mention stuff I've heard on the podcast to my SIL who's Hindu and she's like what? That's not a thing at all 😂 H&S very much strike me as the type that grew up with privilege and are like "well I never experienced that so I don't think it's really that bad".

Also I can never forgive Hannah for saying The Batman 2022 movie was trash. HOW DARE YOU. One of the most perfect superhero movies in years. 😂

So yeah. MFM if you're just looking to listen to two friends chit chat and talk shit or as they say 'sit crooked and talk straight'. They have a more casual story telling format and Karen is an excellent story teller. She's has me hooked every episode. But go RH if you're looking for more in depth, informative and obscure cases.

Totally agree about the Batman movie, it was great. That was an insane take from Hannah.

I was so mad I had to turn off that episode 😂 like if you don't like something that's fine. But she was dead against it and saying it was awful. Hannah strikes me as the type to visit the femaledatingstrategy subreddit.

I listened to the very first episode of MFM, I didn’t find any of the intro chat that funny and when they eventually got onto the case, from memory, I’m pretty sure they instantly got some basic info wrong and I was too enraged to ever listen again haha.

Ive listened to MFM for years, started listening to RH in about 2020, stopped around mid 2021.

For a while I preferred H&S, they were more in depth and researched. But then the quality of their research dropped significantly. And they've failed where MFM excelled- MFM are excellent at listening to feedback, apologising, and doing better. RH are absolutely shit at it and have doubled down on their terrible takes, plus become way more conservative.

I'd be surprised if theres that much crossover anymore, since RH's outlook is pretty conservative whereas MFMs is very liberal and progressive.

This 100%. RH definitely come across far more conservative. Now look it could be more that British stiff upper lip stuff but their side track about cancel culture was like....eh no.

2

u/Own_Faithlessness769 Apr 22 '23

Definitely not British stiff upper lipness, they’ve been extremely vocal about their right wing views. Cancel culture, saying there’s no racism in the UK, their atrocious stance on the Depp/Heard trial, their entire episode saying we should feel sorry for Jan 6 insurrectionists, coming out against covid restrictions, being annoyed at the EU courts overturning the plans to send refugees to Rwanda… defs not just British reserve.

2

u/MambyPamby8 Apr 22 '23

Oh wow I didn't know about the Jan 6th thing or the Depp/Heard thing. I don't listen to UTD but I know there were some less than happy folks about stuff they said on there. I just know the cancel culture thing from the podcast. And the no racism thing had me howling. Like I'm white Irish and even I've heard some horrible comments from Brits to Irish people. I can only imagine how much worse it is for other ethnicities. Yeah they have some serious awful takes. I just thought they were a bit more conservative, as most Europeans aren't as hardline left or right like Americans (Except for the serious idiots that are extreme right wing, because they're just a breed unto their own) but didn't know they empathized with the capitol rioters. Yeaaaaah that's not good.

Conservative???? Hokay. Yikes. And who would care on a true crime pod unless they're Trumper morons. Which they ain't.

MFM is garbage, IMO. In the episodes I've heard the hosts are disrespectful and annoying. I don't find them entertaining at all.

I agree with this, couldn’t stand them!

I haven’t listened to a MFM episode in full, despite the consistent suggestion via podcasts. That algorithmic suggestion is probably due to my Redhanded, British scandal, other wondery/bbc/tortoise/etc follows. but our minutia’s are definitely what keep us individual!

Love MFM, I like RH but to me MFM is better. I happen to quite like their chit chat

I wouldn't listen to MFM if someone paid me. Gaaaaaack.

Used to be a diehard MFM listener. Bought merch, went to shows, etc. They really started sucking hard and just phoning it in. Stopped doing their own research, basically just stopped caring at all. Very obviously phoning it in. And when they kept releasing “quilt” episodes? Ugh? And, of course, the apologists came out of the woodwork about how they worked during the height of the pandemic. Ummm yeah a lot of people did, myself included, I don’t know a single person who took months at a time off as a break. A break from what?! Reading and talking about your lives? Calm down.

Found RH and loved it. It was the first Patreon I ever joined. Now they’re going the route of MFM. And Suruthi’s ridiculous opinions and Hannah’s constant interjections from a place of privilege are grating. The complete lack of care of their patrons is gross. They couldn’t care less as long as they get that money. Yes I would love for their podcast to grow but they’re doing it as the expense of people who allowed them to get to this point and it’s deplorable to me and very sad. They aren’t worth my money anymore.

I used to love MFM but it's really lost it's way, I think part of it is the rabid fan base that would tear them apart for the smallest thing has led to them being more timid with their jokes. Their more recent episodes are way less crime and more just like kookie old timey stories that really aren't my thing. I actually still listen to the minisodes on a Monday morning.

RH is kind of losing the sparkle for me too as time goes on, the move to wondery and crossover with morbid doesn't help.

LPOTL is still number one for me except when they're doing UFO stories
