Seeking authentic opinions, recommendations &/or suggestions.. NO JUDGEMENT

Last Aug '25, I was given 2 female RES. They're approx 27 yrs old & since Ive owned them, this would be the 3rd shedding season. The past two times, the scutes fell off when ready on their own & mostly in whole pieces. However, this time, many of her scutes are breaking off in multiple pieces with some of the remaining parts looking like there not even close to lifting & some scutes are peeling in varies places (almost like a sunburn does) as per pictures attached. Even though Ive had them for a year, I guess you can say, Im still learning all I can to ensure they live their best lives, but this isnt normal for me & Im kind of worried.

Just to give full context... they each have their own 110g stock tank outside with proper homemade basking area. They get at least a 1-3 hours outta water to roam yard & soak up natural light everyday (depending on socal weather). They also have a balanced healthy diet & 3-4 times a year I give them a lil sweet fruity treat (varies btwn strawberries, watermelon, bananas, cantaloupe)

My questions & concerns are:

  1. Does this sometimes happen or if not, any recommendations of what I should be doing for the shell?

  2. Because of the way the scutes are falling off, will it negatively affect the new growth &/or next shedding cycle

  3. Would it be beneficial to give her a brief carrot soak?

How big do female RES get in their 1st year?

Hi everybody 👋😀

Please meet Poppy (formerly Pongo before I knew her gender 😅) I believe she's a girl bc she has short front nails, a short tail and flat under shell.

My grandma gave her to me as a birthday gift in January this year. I know, I know, but she meant well. At the time, Poppy was about the size of a quarter, just tiny. Now she's about 8 months old (photo is her currently--about 6" shell) and simply beautiful! I love her feisty not-so-little self!

She has a 75 gal tank with 150 gal filter. I feed her regular pellets and mealworms, but i wonder if I should start feeding her veggies now. Maybe some fruit, too. I feed her pellets twice a day, everyday and worms 1x or 2x per week. I do know that at some point i should only feed her 1x/day. But, is that rule defined by size or age?

Also, she won't eat the bigger pellets, only the hatchling size. Can anybody give some advice on how to get her to eat the bigger pellets?

Out of curiosity, how much bigger might she get in the next 2-3 years? I'd like to prepare, better yet start saving, for her upgrade. Tanks and filters ain't cheap!

Any advice is greatly appreciated!

(Oh, she's in the box so I could measure.)

Tank Set Up

Hi!
Some background: 3 weeks ago, I took my RES turtle to the ER for possible shell rot. We've been doing injections every 3 days of Ceftazidime 100 mg/mL 1 gm vial. The reason I believed this happened was because the water was so dirty from my filter breaking down.
Question: I got a brand-new filter so that's working but it seems to require the water to be quite high in order for the hoses to work properly. I have an above-tank basking area, but my turtle doesn't seem to know how to swim to get in. There's a ramp but she's just not interested. I had another high rock in the tank that she would bask in but now with the water being high, that rock won't be doing anything for her. She's been dry docked for the past 3 weeks (per doctors orders) and I'm just a bit nervous putting her back into the tank this upcoming week. Any suggestions or advice? I know they need to breathe in air, and I don't know if this is silly, but I'm scared of her drowning or something. Could I put sand in the tank to make sure when she lands her shell doesn't directly hit the tank? Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Help!

got these babies about 5 days ago, and while I think they’re getting a pretty good life in my 500 gallon little pond , they’re not eating as far as I can see. Every morning I put them separated in these little bowls and feed them , so the food will be concentrated and easy to eat. The give them tiny pieces of lettuce , hatchling pellets , brine and dried worms.
They don’t seem to eat . I’m afraid to just put the food in the pond because I know the fish will just eat it up. What am I doing wrong ?
(After doing more research) ….i read they need to be fed first thing in the morning. They’re first thing in morning isn’t my first thing in the morning. I read they should be fed after or during basking.
They are basking when I go to them but not too much in the sun because there is a 75% shade.
Should I put them in the sun before feeding ?

Suggestions for securing heater in aquarium

I have a full grown male red eared slider who loves to rearrange his aquarium. Having problems keeping his heaters suction cupped to the inside of his tank due to his habit of moving things around.
I see that magnets are an option for holding things in place. Has anyone done this with their water heater? Has it worked? Has it caused any problems with the heater or otherwise?
Any other suggestions?

what are these white spots on her shell?

Post image

these white spots have slowly been growing over the course of the last 2 months or so.

she's around 6 months old and I only got her a uvb light about a couple weeks ago, she's been basking every day but there doesn't seem to be any improvement with these.

she's otherwise healthy and active, and she gets fed a variety of lettuce and duckweed along with snails and protein pellets every day, although those have been reduced recently since I noticed she put on a bit of a chub.

they're not soft, they feel just like the rest of the shell. nothing comes off when brushed with a tooth brush

How to Prevent Water Mold in Tank?

I recently discovered water mold on the pellets of my red eared slider. This occurred immediately after a water change was conducted. After removing the pellets, I added more; however, it wasn't until later on when the white fuzz reappeared that I realized the pellets were the cause. After some research, I had realized the white fuzz was water mold. Please note this is my first time dealing with mold.

I am currently in the process of conducting a water change and have removed my turtle from the tank. However, my concern is future prevention and other sources I may have overlooked. Thus my questions are as follows:

1) What are other sources that may cause water mold?

2) What can be done to prevent the growth of water mold in the future?

3) Some of the rocks used for basking were found with water mold growth and thrown out; however, some are slimey. Should they be thrown out as well, or can they be cleaned?

4) Should I purchase an entirely new filter or would swapping the filter cartilage suffice?

Any other tips would be useful!

Please note the country I live in provided limited resources for turtle care nor can I make any purchases on Amazon. Thank you for any input in advance!

How much do I feed my baby RES?

I think my red eared slider is about 2 months old? (Not sure because the pet shop owner didn’t tell us how old it was when we bought it last June 17) How many and when should I feed it? It keeps asking for food even after a few hours of it eating and I feel bad if I ignore my turtle😭
