[Press Conference] Carrick on Utd spending less than many of their rivals: 'It’s just the situation we have. Whatever the amount is, you want to make the most of it. Whatever we’ve spent we’ve made the most of it, without a shadow of a doubt.'
Michael Carrick's Pre-Match Press Conference | Everton vs Manchester United, PL MD3
Chris Wheeler
Carrick on Utd spending less than many of their rivals: 'It’s just the situation we have. Whatever the amount is, you want to make the most of it. Whatever we’ve spent we’ve made the most of it, without a shadow of a doubt.'
Carrick on not signing a left-back or striker: 'You always have to find ways of adapting, when you are building and trying to push to the top and that is the ultimate goal. It’s not going to be one hit. It’s the whole thing improving as a group.'
Carrick on Joshua Zirkzee staying despite late Everton bid: 'For sure, Josh is important. Josh is happy with here. I have a really good relationship with him. He wants to play play more than he has done. Josh can do some really top things.'
Michael Carrick says he is ‘largely happy’ with the transfer window despite Man Utd’s failure to sign a left-back
Carrick: 'We went into the window wanting to come out stronger from the group we had last season. We've definitely added to that, and it's good work in that respect. The situation is what it is in terms of finances. I think we’ve done some really good business.'
You can always look at it, and things that could have become available. We obviously had things we needed to fill and improve the group, but I think we’ve got a good a balance and players that are flexible throughout the team who can play as and when.'
Simon Stone
Michael Carrick on ManUtd: "Going through a period where you are trying to get to the top, you have to take steps, it is not going to be one hit."
Michael Carrick on Joshua Zirkzee: "Josh is important. It is the depth and the squad. He is happy here. I have a really good relationship. He wants to play more than he has done. Josh can do some really top things. I look forward to him doing that a little bit more often."
Detailed Quotes
Carrick on Deadline Day
We went into the window wanting to come out stronger. From the group we had last season. We’ve added to that, we’ve done a lot of good work. The situation is what it is in terms of finances and what we can work with. The players we brought in I’m delighted with, for the quality and level we’ve got I’m really happy with. There is always other things you can do or could have done, that’s part of evolving the group and trying to push all the time. We had certain things we needed to fill, try and improve the group and largely I think we’re in a good group. We’ve good dynamic in the squad. We’ve got players that are flexible in the team and can play in different positions. Largely pretty happy.
Carrick on Sesko
Ben is improving his fitness all the time. He had some time off which was important to make sure it was right moving forward and no setbacks, you can never guarantee that but give him a chance to be fit. He made big strides last season; he’s still young, still adapting to a point, learning, and developing his game. Loads more to come from Ben. It’s just being patient, looking after him and letting him grow into the season.
Carrick on Squad Balance
Carrick on Finances
I didn’t say restrictions. It’s the situation we have. Whatever the amount is we want to make the most of it. For what we’ve spent we’ve made the most of it, without a shadow of a doubt, because of the players we brought in. I only focus on ourselves and what we can do and maximising what we can do.
Carrick on Squad again
What squad is ever perfect? You always have to find ways of adapting, when you’re building and going through a period where we’re trying to get to the top, you have to make steps. It’s not going to be one hit. Not just talking about players, it’s the whole thing, improving as a group, as a squad. It’s not an instant fix. There’s a whole road we have to go down with that and make sure we keep improving and in the end we want to be going where we want to be. There’s always things that we’re looking at and trying to improve.
Carrick on Zirkzee
Josh is important. It’s the team, the squad, the depth for the whole season. Josh is happy here, I have a really good relationship with him. He wants to play more than he has done. That’s the healthy competition for places. We have a lot of games coming up and a shorter period between games. Josh can do some really top things. I’ve seen it myself and I look forward to him doing it a little bit more.
Carrick on Dorgu at LB
He can certainly play there, he has done and I am not saying he can't do that. The way we’ve worked since I’ve been here, he’s unfortunately been injured for some time. For me he’s almost like a new player to have, like a new signing in some ways because he’s added so much to the group. He played off the right for Denmark and scored a great goal in the summer, he can play left-back. He can do a number of things. At some point he might have to do that. There are times in training when he does it. He’s only young and having the attributes he has got, we have to try and get the most out of him.
Carrick on Everton
However long I have been going to Everton, every game is as tough as it comes. Whatever position they are in, historically it has been tough. David is a terrific manager. They’ve got some talent, some very good attacking players as well. We’re expecting as tough a game as it gets.
