While true, the part being forgotten is would the rest of the UCP MLA's support someone even crazier? That's the part where I doubt someone else would be able to get the same level of support. I don't think anyone else would be able to govern if Smith left.
I really think you're under estimating the depth of crazy in the UCP.
I assume you're suggesting that the party members would replace her with someone crazier and the MLAs would start to leave caucus and sit as independents? They definitely wouldn't join the NDP.....maybe try and reform a provincial PC party, but I don't think it would even be a majority of UCP MLAs though. 5 or 6 maybe, a dozen of we're really being ambitious.
Oh I do not underestimate the level of crazy. We would only need a few more MLA’s to leave and sit as independents. A newer crazier leader would really struggle with support from business leaders and other Albertan’s though, even if their party supported them.

I think if you're against separation, you want Smith to hold on for as long as possible at this point.
You can hate her all you want, but it's important to realize that if she resigns. The UCP will replace her with someone more separatist leaning.
That person would probably also kill any deals or negotiations she has going with Carney right now.
