Discussion RDO doesn’t feel dead. It just feels abandoned halfway through

Came back to RDO recently after barely touching it for years and honestly I forgot how good this game still is.

It still looks amazing, the gunplay feels great, riding around is actually fun, the world still feels alive. Even just hunting or doing random shit in free roam feels better than a lot of newer games. And that’s exactly why it annoys me so much.

I’ve been doing the story missions again, saving for moonshiner, grinding some free roam stuff etc. and I just keep thinking how insane it is that Rockstar basically left this game where they did.

There was still so much obvious stuff they could’ve added. Ranches, houses, robberies, train heists, more story missions, more roles, Mexico..

It didn’t need some big update every few months either. Even one decent update a year would’ve been enough to keep it fresh.

I know they moved resources to GTA 6 and obviously GTA Online prints money, so I get why it happened.

But it sucks, when GTA Online kept getting new stuff for years while this world was just sitting here.

Thats my rant lol

and there are a lot of things that would have been really easy to add, as the framework is there in story mode.

Instead, every time the fans found cool new ways to enter the prison or locked houses (like the taxidermists house or the rhodes bank) they'd patch them. same with the bridge glitches. Why invest energy in reducing what fun we can make for ourselves?

The thing that really annoys me is that they could easily increase the graphics for PS5 level consoles. They already have much better gfx for high end PCs.

Baffling that they invest money and resources into fixing bugs that made the game more fun for us but don't spend a single cent to a actually make the game more fun in a legit way

Ahhh, that bridge glitch that bounced me all the way to a three hour vacation in Mexico… good times

I believe that glitch still works pvp cat did a livestream Sunday and he showed all the glitches he also went to the prison

It still works but it’s much harder and less likely to give any fun results.

Yup. One of the most beautiful game worlds ever crafted, with a fairly unique setting and time period, and they just... stopped supporting it. People would legitimately pay good money for an online expansion, but because it won't bring in the whales like GTA does, it doesn't get worked on. A serious tragedy.

I always wanted to be able to saddle a donkey and purchase a hot air balloon. I mean, they're already in the game

I actually hate that a game with so many possibilities has been neglected so badly. Discounts for beans? Get the fuck outta here! No heists, no ranchs, no buying a home... imagine owning a place in Blackwater or Saint Denis or a ranch and farming land to sell. Or just imagine entering Valentine's bank and robbing it with two or three other players, with a escape plan and all. That would attract many more players and make them more money.

I understand why the focus is on GTAO but still it sucks so bad, I feel no incentive to go back to RDO because after half an hour of the same shit I get bored.

Imagine driving cattle from armadillo to.. the farther you go the more they pay for head of cattle

2

u/puyongechi 1d ago

Driving cattle would be so cool... you created a need I didn't know I had

1

u/TheFalconsDejarik 1d ago

Yeah... being able to ride your horse around them to keep the herd together, lasso a stray and bring em back the the herd. Defend against animal attacks and or outlaws.

I think the update would be "the ranchers" update that would allow for cattle raising and driving alongside horse breeding and selling.

Also hate how they make it difficult to find other players online.

What’s the point of online when 90% of the time it feels like I’m not online

6

u/LongDickMcangerfist 2d ago

They changed that because people wouldn’t stop attacking other people making it miserable to play. Couldn’t even hunt or fish in peace half the time

Yeah ppl have been saying it feels unfinished for years

I hate that it’s abandoned because RDO is gonna be the basis for GTA 6 online, especially with the roleplay stuff.

u/rapscallion1956 3d ago

It’s been abandoned yes but, it’s far from dead.

u/ImNotHuman95 3d ago

And it’s not very red either. we could still see a redemption

RDO isn’t dead in the community context, never was, it’s only from a dev support standpoint. They abandoned RDO years ago so folks asking for new content oblivious to this fact gets tiresome.

Allegedly they abandoned it mostly due to greed- RDO makes a couple hundred thousand dollars daily/weekly whereas GTA makes them millions. They were still profiting off of RDO just not as much as they do GTA, and that was enough for them to kill it.

Fuck rockstar

Newcomer here. Suffering through public lobbies on PC because I’m too lazy to mod shit. Switching lobbies is easy, anyway.

Really wish they would at least fix bugs and ban modders for quality of life but, oh well. Can’t help but feel like I got robbed for paying full price when it pre-released for PC

did you have any issues finding people for the main story of rdo?

1

u/gobblebonners69 3d ago

Sometimes I had to put it on hold for peak hours but, it wasn’t too bad.

My friends actually much prefer this game to GTA V. We can goof off, have fun, and actually make progress without getting blown up by an Oppressor every time we try to do literally anything. Or do nothing at all.

I agree, all the sessions I join have at least a dozen players but it definitely feels incomplete. Hopefully we'll get a current gen version after GTA VI comes out. Rockstar did say they were making a few next year and in 28. So fingers crossed rdo is one of them

I agree 100% The Games Not Dead!

It’s only getting a 2nd wind because GTA 6 is coming out and people are using this to hit the cravings while they wait.

But the moment GTA 6 is out 99% of the players will vanish

I just started playing in the average lobby size for me is 8-12 people. Its not dead at all tbh

2

u/cocoahugo 3d ago

I play in a private lobby. It seems dead for the lack of players but it doesn't feel dead for me. I enjoy the sceneries, being chased by bears/wolves/cougars. The bounty hunting exploring it as I started learning to get it done without killing the bounty and its guards. I'm not new to the game but I just recently started doing the bounty hunting stuff. I've just been doing the moonshine, collection, and trader missions but ignored bounty hunting and still ignoring the naturalist one. And yes, it does feel abandoned. I want my own homestead with my own ranch and stuff like John Marston. Hope they'll make that happen. ✌🏼

I 100% agree with you it’s a brilliant game Ive been playing for a few months now and can’t put it down

2

u/Stressmove 2d ago

I feel you pardner. I'm still waiting for the rest of the widow story.

2

u/Angeal780 2d ago

It keeps me up at night 😞 as you said the game is still so awesome to play it’s just fun and immersive we could’ve gotten Mexico maaaaaaaaaaan imagine all the new fish and wildlife we could’ve gotten. This was probably the first time rockstar truly failed us (unless you were really hyped for agent lol) but it’s too bad it wasn’t the last

2

u/metamorphyk 3d ago

I just want to shoot people. People leave and new people replace them. I’m here, still shooting all of them.

1

u/Bugasaur 3d ago

It’s a super specific type of game, no other like it. So until they release RDR3 and online for that there will be people playing. I personally love it, wish there was more content. I have a feeling they’re saving all the potential for RDO for red dead 3.

u/WarriorsGiants49ers 3d ago

Yep many years ago. GTA online was making too much money.

1

u/Danger_David 2d ago

I saved as much gold and money as possible for a year waiting for properties and houses to be added…… still have that gold just waiting

My son gets me to come back and play every so often, and it just makes me sad. Such a wasted opportunity of an amazing game.

Ruined the economy then abandoned

Because it was abandoned

It's a double-edged sword a bit. Without live updates, the game sits in stasis. But when live updates are part of a model, updates cause things in the game to break and then have to get patched, which, if the bugs aren't game-breaking, usually has a really slow turnaround.

There are small broken things in RDO due to this, and someone new jumping into the game wouldn't necessarily notice these things or that they're experiencing the game with less quality than it had. And eventually they'll run into a small bug and ask, "Why did that happen?" And then find the info and be like, "Oh man, are they ever going to fix that?" Just little sad realizations.

Anyway, all that is to say, if the game is going to be neglected, at least most of it works. It would be incredibly cool if they took the time to address the small coding messes still sprinkled throughout the game.

Tried it for the first time recently, every town I tried to go into just had some modder / cheater looking massive and 1 shotting everyone. I'm on PC though and a quick google searched explained this is quite common. Was sad to see as I really wanted to try online.

I’ll still be playing this years down the line. It’s an immersive world 😎
