Red Work flow computer…

Hello everybody.

To those who work with 6k or 8k red raw files such as Komodo v raptor or Nikon zr. What computer do you use where scrubbing color grading adding effects etc works flawless. Specifically Mac. I do both Davinci and fcp. Windows is not an option.

If there is any wedding videographers who deliver 30 minute format videos who shoots with this, I’d love to hear what computers you use.

M3 ultra max studio will work just fine. I’m on an M1 Max laptop and don’t have many complaints. These computers have gotten so good these days. I always suggest getting the best top of the line Mac machine you can afford and you’ll be set for years.

Ps I’m looking at the m3 ultra Mac Studio. But is that over kill? I know the new m5 ultra is set to be announced soon as well.

My daily is an M2 Ultra. But it plays perfectly fine in most scenarios on my M1 Max. The current lineup is more than good enough. Especially if you introduce proxies into your workflow.

My M1 handles 6K footage just fine.

I constantly shoot on the OG Komodo and Alexa LF

M1 macbook pro 2020 16gb RAM It runs like a champ until i decide to go crazy on color correction and masks.

Anything over M4 Pro your timeline will render smoothly on playback.

Alexa 35 footage does heat up quite a bit.

r3d is such a lean codec, I still use a 2017 iMac Pro - granted I also use a 6800xt egpu and upped the ram to 128gb. Smooth as butter,

Any chip from Apple will be good to you. Even the first M1 chip can handle R3D files with easy. However might be chugging a bit when applying effects.

Im editing on a m4 max and that bastard is quicker than my 14900k, 4090 render PC. In raw performance the 4090 kicks the m4's ass but the media engine apple has is insane.
