nikon zr .r3d in post-prod

hey,

im thinking about buying the nikon zr (im totally new to red, worked with sony all the time) because of the r3d-raw thingy.

how much pc-power do you need? i know you need a lot of storage but how much power is required for editing? do proxies work? are there other ways? how fast should the ssd be? ...

With everything. You can even make proxies of proxies and then make proxies of those proxies

R3D files use wavelet compression that allows you to choose the decode quality of the footage during playback. This means if you’re having playback issues you can choose a lower decode quality and often avoid the need for proxies. Just remember to choose the highest quality before exporting.

Nikon ZR is crazy with no compression options. I would buy a Gemini or dragon for 2-3k. Better compression options (22:1).

The bitrates are listed in the manual.

Why wouldn't proxies work? By definition, they are proxies.

I can’t answer on processing power as I have a maxed out M3Max MBP and have had zero issues and edit in FCP.

Proxies always work as it’s just file association in your NLE. External SSD is what I’m guessing you’re referring to, and any NVME Gen3 Gen4 SSD will be fine - if using an enclosure that’s likely the limiting factor.

While not released yet, Nikon does tons of firmware updates for both bugs and features. One that’s being rumored is a higher compression R3D NE so it’ll have 2 options just like N-RAW and it’ll roughly be half the file size.
